As a preparation for future competitions, around 160 Filipino bowlers took part in the annual All Filipino Tenpin Club (AFTC) Masters bowling tournament yesterday.
Wearing their green uniforms and bowling outfits, the players - both men and women - took turns to get a strike and win at the Qatar Bowling Center. The event was divided into three categories – A, B and C.
AFTC president Kennedy Alfaro said the Masters is the most prestigious competition held by the organisation every year. The club also boasts of its anniversary competition, Pamaskong Handog, and a Valentine’s event. Since its inception in 1989, he added, AFTC has attracted enthusiasts and organised various competitions in Qatar.
Alfaro said the tournament was part of preparations for bigger competitions such as the 16th GCC All Filipino Bowling tournament, which would be held in Qatar this year. The AFTC president and his brother, Bernabe, told Gulf Times that they were gearing up for the international meet.
The club also organises the “tournament for a cause” to help victims of typhoons and other natural calamities in the Philippines. Some of the beneficiaries include distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who stay at the Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO).
“We also help our members who are in need, especially those who are sick,” Alfaro said.
AFTC comprises Filipino engineers, accountants, doctors, dentists and other professionals.
The winners of the event were as follows:
* Class A: Bernabe Alfaro, champion; Joel Oliveros, 1st runner-up; Kennedy Alfaro, 2nd runner-up; and Romie Eborde, 3rd runner-up.
* Class B: Ian Herda, champion; Nilo Abril, 1st runner-up; Norie Felipe, 2nd runner-up; and Melvin Dela Paz, 3rd runner-up.
* Class C: Debbie Comia, champion; Jane Baldovino, 1st runner-up; Leyland Militante, 2nd runner-up; and Emelie Mancao, 3rd runner-up.
