No help forthcoming for Indian fishermen detained in Iran

There seems no end in sight for the ordeal of 29 Indian fishermen from Qatar, who have completed more than 100 days in Iranian detention, for reportedly straying into the territorial waters of Iran.
Sources said until now no significant efforts have been made by anyone to seek their release even though their sponsors reportedly remitted the fines imposed on the seven boats seized by the Iranian coastguards.
“Every day, we are receiving SOS calls from our friends. However, we are helpless as no effective assistance whatsoever has come so far from the Indian foreign ministry even though its authorities have been alerted about their detention through the embassies in Doha and Teheran,” said a fisherman in Al Wakrah.
In a statement made to this newspaper a couple of days ago from Kannyakumari in India’s Tamil Nadu state, South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF) sought speedy action from Qatar and Indian governments and the Indian embassies in Doha and Teheran to seek the release of the fishermen.
The forum repeated that the border violation by the fishermen group was not “deliberate” and hence they could be pardoned by the Iran
authorities.
Nizar Kochery, regional co-ordinator of SAFF and rights activist in Doha, said he has been in touch with the fishermen on a day to day basis and found that they were fast running out of money and were surviving on one meal a day, provided by the Iranian coastguards.
The legal activist said the fishermen’s families were very much concerned about their predicament and they have conveyed their disappointment over the delay in securing their release.
