The gas-to-liquids (GTL) industry is still in the infancy and requires additional players such as technology providers, resource owners and operators for it to mature and develop, said Oryx GTL chief executive officer Abdulrahman M al-Suwaidi.
“It is a massive market with significant room for growth,” al-Suwaidi said at the opening session of the World GTL Congress here yesterday.
The advancement of the energy industry is critical to the ongoing development, under the guidance of HH the Emir and his long term vision, Qatar continues to be dynamic in trying to anticipate and meet the market requirements.
Accordingly, Qatar’s decision to become the GTL capital of the world is in line with the strategy of meeting global energy needs in a manner complementary to its strong position in the LNG market with additional value-adding products.
“As a business we cannot control macro-economic factors, however, we believe we can be successful in an unpredictable market by forging strong partnerships and collaborations that can help us confront challenges, benefit from mutual synergies and provide inspiration to others.
“This implies that the long-term success of the energy industry shall ultimately rely on the collaboration of its stakeholders — such as resource owners, national oil companies, international oil companies and technology providers — in the advancement and joint implementation of solutions to meet customer requirements in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.”
Al-Suwaidi said the conference is an opportunity for stakeholders to engage with each other and to increase awareness about the innovation-driven GTL industry and the value it can provide.
Oryx GTL has demonstrated that gas-to-liquids can help address global energy security needs by producing cleaner, premium liquid fuels offering lower emissions at point of use. Our GTL products have been absorbed into the market place.
This is because even though the processes to produce the GTL products use innovative and sophisticated technologies, the products have familiar characteristics to customers with conventional products and have superior attributes for certain applications.
“After all, being a truly successful business means having a sound value proposition for the customer and GTL’s ability to be used within existing infrastructure is a tremendous advantage.
“Furthermore, we believe GTL products can meet market needs for the foreseeable future even as environmental regulations become more stringent.
“Though the overall environmental impact of GTL is comparable to conventional refinery products from a CO2 emissions perspective, the carbon dioxide footprint of GTL plants is an area for improvement.
“At Oryx GTL we are committed to working closely with technology providers to continually identify ways to improve our process and minimise emissions,” al-Suwaidi said. Page 34
