The transplanted liver was donated by a Filipino expatriate to a 59-year-old Pakistani patient who had suffered hepatocirrhosis for more than 10 years.
The surgery team included three liver and pancreas transplant consultant surgeons, Dr Hatem Khalaf, Dr Mohamed Shoudry and Dr Henrique Yaktsen, in addition to liver transplant specialist, Dr Ahmed Khalil and consultant anaesthesiologist Mohamed Nagy al-Masri.
HMC Organ Transplant Committee chairman Dr Yousef al-Muslamani said: “The second successful procedure was real evidence that our organ transplantation programme, which started in 1986, was making a real difference to people in Qatar.”
Dr Khalaf explained that the new liver recipient, Raja Khan has been suffering from severe hepatocirrhosis for more than 10 years and had been receiving treatment at his homeland until he came to Qatar in 2009.
“When he arrived in Qatar, his care was taken over by Dr Shoudry at Outpatient department clinics of Hamad Hospital. Dr Shoudry assessed his case and convinced him that the transplant is feasible,” he said while mentioning that there were currently some 13 patients who are critically in need of liver transplant.
“We have a successful liver transplant programme, which currently witnesses considerable progress while we are looking at the performance of more surgeries,” he said.
Khan, who is an employee of the Pakistani embassy in Qatar, has expressed deep gratitude to the leadership of the country under HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani for making health affordable to all.
The first liver transplant in the country was conducted in December 2011.
The transplanted liver was donated by a 48-year-old Filipino expatriate, who died of a cerebral stroke, to a 43-year-old Egyptian who had suffered for several years of complications due to hepatitis C.
The achievement by the surgery team was dedicated to HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, in recognition and appreciation of her support to the National Organ Transplant Programme.
