The Ministry of Environment has organised a workshop to train students of a girls’ school in Doha how to recycle waste materials, as part of a series of initiatives to raise awareness among youths about adopting sustainable living.
The event was held at Rodha Bint Jassim Secondary School where Sheikha Moza Mohamed al-Thani, an environmental educator, gave an awareness lecture for 20 students. Activities co-ordinators Sheikha Mariam al-Thani and Moza al-Khonji were present.
The lecture was part of the Ministry of Environment’s activities designed for raising awareness about the climate change and its impact on daily life.
It also came as 10th environmental season, which includes awareness-raising activities and field events to invest in the environmental expertise for the benefit of schools.
Sheikha Moza explained to the students how long certain materials can take to naturally decompose. Glass bottles take 1 to 2mn years to decompose, while bananas peels take two-three weeks.
A workshop on recycling waste was conducted after the lecture. The environmental educator and students also turned old clothes into new beautiful handbags that they can use.
In the same context, the ministry organised environmental awareness debate on “waste recycling” for students of Al Sailiya Independent Secondary School as well.
Principal Wadha al-Noaimi, teachers and students attended this discussion which was aimed at achieving the educational and environmental awareness goals.
Sheikha Moza prefaced this debate with brief explanation of its objectives. She informed that the Solid Domestic Waste Treatment Centre in Mesaieed is considered the first integrated treatment facility in the Middle East and recycles 95% of trash.
The debate started between two teams, one of them encouraged using plastic material, while the other was against using this material. Through the discussion, the attendants recognised some solutions for using plastic issue such as reducing the use of the material and using the alternatives.
