Katara Art Centre (KAC) is launching the Concept Space on January 9 at 7pm, bringing a strong focus on design and design thinking to its programme.
The purpose of the Concept Space is to introduce visitors of the KAC the thinking behind design and encourage experimentation.
The opening night will bring together a group of respected designers and design educators in an informal setting for conversations on design, their favourite design work, and the process behind the finished product.
The speakers will include Tim Makower from Msheireb Projects, Thomas Modeen, Paolo Cordini, and Richard Lombard from Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar, Amin Matni from the Centre for Design Innovation, and Jelena Putnik and Konstantin Dzukeski, an independent design team based in Doha.
For the following month, the Concept Space will transform into an interactive area where designers, students, and those interested in design can create and share their ideas with everyday materials.
Visuals and videos exploring regional and international design will be displayed throughout the month, allowing visitors to see and explore the world of design while taking part in creating their own ideas.
In the coming months the Concept Space will become a hub for local designers to showcase and produce original work.
KAC curator and artistic director Mayssa Fattouh stated that the Concept Space “aims to be a platform for young and emerging designers, locally and internationally, interested in merging a strong sense of aesthetics with experimental concepts that pushes the boundaries of the discipline and looks at it from outside the existing mould”.
