The Advisory Committee of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in Qatar recently held a seminar focusing on a number of important issues currently affecting the industry.
ACCA is the world’s largest global body for professional accountants with 154,000 members and more than 450,000 students in 170 countries.
The continuing professional development (CPD) event, which took place at La Cigale hotel, enabled more than 60 ACCA professional accountants to hear about the latest developments in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and the key challenges in establishing good corporate governance.
They also heard a lecture from the guest of honour Waleed R al-Abdulla, Qatar Foundation Deputy CFO.
Newton De-Niese, KPMG Qatar director (Audit & Advisory) gave an update on IFRS, speaking about latest developments and implementation challenges on certain standards, while Rami Wadie, Partner & Corporate Governance Leader for the Middle East, based in Kuwait, talked about key challenges in establishing good governance, with a focus on the corporate governance code for companies regulated by Qatar Financial Markets Authority.
Chairman of the ACCA Members Advisory Committee in Qatar, Ayoob Olia said, “The ACCA Qatar Advisory Committee (QAC) is proud to have held its inaugural CPD event for its members in Qatar.  We look forward to holding more CPD events in 2013 and in increasing the ACCA’s visibility.  In addition, with the help of the ACCA Qatar and Oman office, we would like to increase  the awareness of the accountancy profession in Qatar which is  in line with Qatar National Vision 2030  and in particular the pillar of human development.  To this effect, QAC  would  also  like to work with other professional accounting  bodies in further promoting the career and development opportunities in the accountancy profession in Qatar.
“On behalf of the QAC, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the speakers and especially thank Deepa Chandrashekar for her dedication and effort in putting this successful event together.”
Ritu Nanda, ACCA head (Qatar and Oman) said, “ We are delighted to have been able to support the Members Advisory Committee in Qatar, which was recently established in Qatar to represent more than 160 ACCA members living and working in the country. This event offered updates for professional accountants on key issues, which are not only important for the accountancy profession, but for the wider business community in Qatar. We look forward to working with QAC in future to provide more high level events for our members in Qatar.”
