Qatar Red Crescent has honoured its volunteers for their humanitarian services at a ceremony marking International Volunteer Day.
The celebrations were held in conjunction with 187 national societies around the world on December 5 in recognition of the efforts and dedication of volunteers in the service of humanitarian work.
QRC secretary general Saleh bin Ali al-Mohannadi praised the contribution of volunteers to the humanitarian activities being carried out by the society.
“Voluntary service is one of the seven guiding principles of humanitarian action and as we celebrate International Volunteer Day we express our appreciation for their continuing efforts in light of the fact that they have been considered the cornerstone of the international humanitarian movement since its inception,” he said.
Al-Mohannadi said Islam urges volunteerism and selflessness, perseverance and solidarity.
“Volunteering is good both for themselves and the community. With just a little of your time you can make a positive addition to the lives of others,” he added.
He pointed out that QRC had been interested in volunteerism as a strategic dimension since its inception in 1978.
“Qatar Red Crescent seeks tirelessly to add a new generation of volunteers to support humanitarian work and meet growing needs,” he said.
Mohamed bin Ahmed al-Kuwari, head of volunteers at QRC, said: “It is a pleasure to celebrate today on the important occasion of International Volunteer Day; a chance to say thank you for helping Qatar Red Crescent.”
He stressed that volunteerism was one of the pillars of humanitarian work and sustainable development and therefore the organisation would continue to support QRC’s Department of Volunteers as part of its vision for 2012-2016.
QRC has more than 1,000 volunteers serving the organisation at the local and international level.
It was founded in 1978 as a humanitarian organisation that aims to assist and empower vulnerable individuals and communities without discrimination or prejudice.
Headquartered in Doha, QRC is a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and works locally and internationally.
