QDVC is working closely with different schools of Qatar to raise awareness of the children on environmental protection approach.
This is in line with its sustainable development policy and in the frame of the ongoing United Nations Climate Change
Conference in Doha.
Since the beginning of November, more than 500 pupils, from seven to 15 years, attended Qatari Diar Vinci Construction (QDVC) workshops on sustainable development and climate change at Ibn Khaldoun Prep-School, French Lycee Bonaparte, Abu Obaida Independent Preparatory School and Arifaa Primary Independent School for Girls.
The goal of the workshop is to explain the greenhouse effect, the causes of climate change and the solution to reduce it.
“After the workshop, a lot of kids wanted to be architects, engineers or scientists to be able to find sustainable solutions for the future,” noticed one of the teachers.
The children will go on working on sustainable development topics with their teachers. French Bonaparte School pupils will for instance make “art out of waste” with their art teacher.
QDVC’s Sustainable Development team received certificates of appreciation from the schools. A survey made at the end of the workshops showed that the pupils were personally ready to take preventive actions to reduce the phenomenon of climate change and the preservation of environment, such as turning off the lights when leaving the room.
“Education for sustainable development is essential,” said Sheikha Athba bint Thamer al-Thani, chief support services officer and sustainable development manager of QDVC.
“It helps children understand and mitigate the impact of global warming and encourages changes in their attitude, that’s why I’m really happy to be able to collaborate with schools. Interaction between them and companies such as QDVC also allow us to share academic information with our day to day experience. I hope that such workshops can be part of the global response to
climate change.”
QDVC is the first Qatari construction company to have received the Qatar Sustainability Assessment System certification for on-going projects in Lusail LRT and the Sheraton Park project.
QDVC is currently working in Lusail for car parks and the light rail transit system, on the Sheraton Park site project, in the Pumping Station 70 Doha North Sewage Joint Venture, and in the Qatar Bahrain Causeway Joint Venture.
