As it strives to inspire young people to become a success, Qatar University (QU) will host its first ever TEDxQatarUniversity event tomorrow (Thursday, November 29).
TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) was established to bring together extraordinary people to promote the notion, “ideas worth spreading” through a lively and open exchange of ideas.
TEDx is a self-organised event, with the letter “x” standing for independently organised TED event.
The theme of TEDxQatarUniversity 2012 is Quest for #Novelty.
As novelty stands for innovation, originality, newness and uniqueness, the aim of the event is to show that Qatar University is the place to look out for that.
A total of nine speakers – students, alumnus and members of the wider community – will give short presentations at the event, all with the theme of inspiring young people to achieve their dreams.
The guest speaker will be Khalid Bougasoum, the latest winner of Stars of Science season four.
Bougasoum will speak at the event about his experiences inventing the device tahi, an automatic cooker, as an example of one of the opportunities now open to young people in Qatar.
Launching the conference at QU, TEDxQatarUniversity head of public relations Subah al-Kuwari said: “Our aim is to portray the inspiring voice of Qatar through TEDxQatarUniversity, where ‘x’ represents everyone – may they be Qatari, men, women, even kids. We are looking forward to bringing forth a fusion of enterprise, youth and arts from within Qatar.”
The TEDxQatarUniversity organising team comprises 35 students.
The team has been divided into groups focusing on tasks such as public relations, media, speaker selection, logistics, and procurement.
