The Minister of Energy and Industry and Qatar Petroleum chairman and managing director, HE Dr Mohamed bin Saleh al-Sada, yesterday unveiled an Energy and Industry Sustainability Report during a ceremony held on the sidelines of the opening of the Qatar Sustainability Expo (QSE) at the Doha Exhibition Centre.

An official copy of the report was presented to COP18-CMP8 president HE Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah, who inaugurated the expo, at the ceremony held at the Qatar Energy and Industry pavilion at the expo.

Al-Sada also launched a “Climate Change video” during the event.

The event represented the energy and industry sector’s contribution to the COP18 /CMP8
conference presently being held in Doha.

In a keynote address,  al-Sada noted that the report was “a key mechanism for supporting the energy sector’s implementation of sustainability”.

“This year’s report captures the essence of sustainable development efforts of the major companies of the energy sector of Qatar,” he said.

“It gives emphasis to  two high-priority sustainability issues: first, the safety measures and the quality of safety performance data and second, the sector’s climate change approach and performance which includes several large initiatives that we have undertaken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

He declared that Qatar was well positioned as an energy leader that provides critically needed, lower-emission and environmentally-friendly liquified natural gas (LNG) to all corners of the globe, while implementing economic diversification and environmental stewardship.

All operators will comprehensively report their health, safety and environment (HSE) as well as sustainable development performance data and evolve a five-year strategy that oversees continual improvement.

“We will continue to look for ways to raise the bar of the Sustainable Development Industry Reporting as a leading regional initiative that promotes transparency and performance. We aim to continue driving improvements in the sector’s reporting and performance on sustainability issues and adding value and contribution towards the Qatar national Vision 2030,” QP HSE Regulations and Enforcement Directorate director Saif al-Naimi said.
