The event included awareness lectures, counselling sessions and activity booths distributing health information brochures, giving proper diet advice, and measuring visitors’ blood glucose levels.
Department head Dr Tahra El Obeid said the students contributed to the event by producing scientific information and delivering messages in user-friendly language for visitors.
They made posters and brochures listing simple lifestyle tips for diabetics, provided appropriate recipes and meal plans and some simple solutions that help in reducing diabetes complications such as adopting a healthy lifestyle by exercising and following a balanced diet.
“It is well-known to health specialists that the Gulf has the highest prevalence of diabetes in the Arab region, and they usually point to the sedentary lifestyle and junk food consumption as the main reasons behind this dilemma,” she said.
Associate professor of Biomedical Sciences Dr Nasser Rizk said that discussion sessions explained the difference between Stage 1, Stage 2 and gestational diabetes.
