Eid al-Fitr was marked yesterday with thousands of faithful congregating for prayers at mosques and open grounds across Qatar.
HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani performed Eid prayer at the Al Wajbah prayer ground, accompanied by HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Emir’s Personal Representative HH Sheikh Jassem bin Hamad al-Thani and a number of sheikhs and ministers.
Sheikh Dr Thaqeel Sayyer al-Shammari, the Judge at the Court of Cassation, who is also a member of the Supreme Judicial Council, led the prayer and delivered the Eid sermon.
He thanked Allah the Almighty for the blessings bestowed upon Muslims as they were able to complete the fasting of the holy month of Ramadan.
Sheikh al-Shammari urged Muslims to take advantage of fasting to purify the soul and seize the occasion of Eid for a great deal of worship and good deeds, and to maintain ties of kinship.
He called upon Muslims to cleanse their hearts of envy and hatred as these are sources of disunity and differences, and urged them as well to follow the true teachings of Islam.
At other prayer sessions too, imams gave sermons in which they urged Muslims to continue performing good deeds they practised during the holy month of Ramadan, so that they would get closer to Allah.
The imams also urged the faithful to utilise the Eid to visit relatives, be tolerant to each other and to discard differences, and reminded them of Islam’s noble teachings and objectives of religious occasions.
After the Eid prayer, HH the Emir received at the Al Wajbah Palace sheikhs, ministers, the Advisory Council speaker and members, the undersecretaries, heads of the diplomatic missions, officers of the armed forces, police, directors of departments and national corporations and the citizens.
The reception was attended by the Heir Apparent, the Emir’s Personal Representative, the Emir’s Special Adviser HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa al-Thani and sons of HH the Emir.
At the Eid al-Fitr prayer organised by the Qatar Muslim Islahi Centre at Frij al-Nasr, visiting Indian scholar Sayyid Mohamed Shakir, who is the principal of Madeenathul Uloom Arabic College in Pulikkal, Kerala and ISM state president, spoke.
Among the popular mosques and main prayer grounds were: Hamad Ali Al Saada mosque (Gharaffa), Al Furqan Middle School (Luqta), Old Rayyan prayer ground (opposite Saad Ibn Obaidan mosque), Industrial Area open ground (adjacent to Al Attiyah mosque), Barwa mosque (Abu Hamour), Al Saad Sports Club, Hamad Hospital mosque, Rumailah Hospital mosque, Doha Stadium (Old Ghanim area), Al Saal mosque (Mamoura), Arab Sports Club (Hilal), Barwa Village mosque (Wakrah), Imam Muslim mosque (Najma), prayer ground near Muneera bint Sultan mosque, Qatar Sports Club (West Bay), open ground in Al Khor - zone 16 and the open ground on Al Khor Corniche.
The open prayer grounds in Al Nasr, Bin Omran and New Rayyan, Al Wakrah and Wakrah Sports Club as well as the open ground near Muneera bint Sultan mosque at West Bay had separate provisions for women.
About 1,300 mosques hosted worshippers this Ramadan. A total of 17 imams from Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco were invited to give Islamic lectures and lead “taraweeh” and “tahhajud” prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.
By end of Ramadan, the imams had given 39,000 lectures at 30 lectures per day in all the 1,300 mosques.
