The students from high school and university were given an insight into the growing opportunities at one of Qatar’s most successful companies, and developed valuable work experience.
Qtel welcomed the young men and women to its West Bay-headquartered operations to participate in the unique programme at the start of the summer.
At the graduation ceremony, over a dozen Qtel executives, some of whom had acted as official programme mentors assigned to individual interns, turned out to commend the young people for their hard work and dedication.
Qtel has a strong belief in programmes like this one, where young people can be exposed to real work life in a short time, promoting more successful lifelong careers for individuals while strengthening the Qatari job market for the future.
Many of Qtel’s leading and senior employees started with the company as interns. Today, they are making huge contributions to Qtel’s progress and growth.
The company hopes that many of the interns will become future Qtel leaders by following the same path and joining Qtel upon graduation.
The 75 interns worked across the company business units, including Customer Services, Technology, General Services, Group HR, Business Solutions, International Services, Group Legal and Consumer Services.
A student speaker at the Qtel event compared his internship, in Qtel’s technology business unit, to the best kind of practical schooling possible, quoting ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius’s words: “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”
Qtel HR career development officer Hamda Ali spoke to the interns about their own ‘Generation Y’ – all born 1985 and1995. As Qtel will be focussing its recruitment efforts on this generation for years to come, the company has developed several initiatives, such as the internship programme, to target and cultivate this group.
To gain the coveted Qtel internships, high school students submitted applications at local career fairs and also applied directly to Qtel. Undergraduate students, many of whom are being sponsored by Qtel as they pursue their studies in Qatar and abroad, were nominated by different universities in Qatar and other local and international institutions.
