The Ramadan cannon at Katara, teaching youngsters about the importance of the holy month in an interesting and interactive way

As part of the Ramadan festivities being held at Katara, officials have announced the launch of the Ramadan Cannon Competition, which provides children with the opportunity to learn about the holy month in an interesting way, and gives three participants the chance to win a prize at the end of the festival.
The competition, which runs until August 24, will see a cannon fire packets of sweets with information about Ramadan attached into the air every evening at 10pm.  The children that collect the most ‘fact-strips’ over the month will be declared the winners at the close of the competition.
Public relations manager at Katara, Malika al-Shraim said: “Katara is always seeking new and interesting ways to engage its visitors with the country’s culture, arts and heritage.”
“On the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, we are very proud to present this modernised version of a longstanding Ramadan tradition – the cannon - and a fun opportunity to learn about the Islamic religion’s prophets and teachings,” she added.
The final counting ceremony will take place at the Al Misk tent at 9pm on August 25, when the top three participants will be presented their prizes.
The competition is being held to mark Katara’s first ever Ramadan Festival, which is being hosted from 8pm each evening in three tents along the cultural village’s beachfront.
“The festival showcases a number of Qatari traditions and offers a variety of interactive cultural and arts workshops for its visitors,” explained a spokesperson.
