Charles Carlson

Standard Chartered announced yesterday the appointment of Charles Carlson as CEO for its Qatar operations. Charles’ appointment took effect from August, 1, 2011.
Charles follows David Godwin who, as of 1 September, 2011, will take up a new role within the bank as Regional Head of Group Special Asset Management for the Middle East, Pakistan and Africa, and will be based in the bank’s regional head office in the Dubai International Financial Centre.
Charles has been with Standard Chartered for more than 11 years and is a seasoned international banker with over 30 years experience, many of which have been in major financial centres such as New York, London and Singapore.
“Charles spent his early years in the Middle East and worked in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain for seven years. He was on the Management Committee of Standard Chartered‘s Global Project and Export Finance business, and his expertise is of particular relevance to Qatar,” a spokesman said.
Commenting on the new appointment, Christos Papadopoulos, regional CEO, Standard Chartered Mena said: “Standard Chartered is committed to supporting the national economy of Qatar and its development as a regional financial centre. With long experience in the Middle East, particularly in the GCC, together with a strong track record in major international financial centres, Charles will be an asset to our business and the financial community in Qatar. His appointment comes at an exciting time when we are stepping up our focus on the Middle East and North Africa region and we are confident that Charles will play a major role in leading our growth in Qatar.”
