Filming at Al Shaheen oil field

Two short films about the Al Shaheen field, Qatar’s largest offshore oil field have received international recognition, winning top awards at this year’s World Fest Film, Houston and the World Media Festival, Hamburg.
Developed by Maersk Oil with Qatar Petroleum (QP) they offer unique insight into the world-class project execution, technical capability and environmental management behind the field’s development.
The first, ‘Setting a New Standard’ was produced for last year’s United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) Climate in Cancun, Mexico to highlight Qatar’s role in sustainable development and emissions reduction. Together QP and Maersk Oil have successfully reduced gas flaring from the field to an absolute minimum - a rare accomplishment in the industry.
As a result of its approach to environmental management, the project’s gas gathering system has been recognised as the world’s largest Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project by the UNFCC, as part of the Kyoto Protocol.
The film features HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Chief of Emiri Diwan Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah and Director of Oil and Gas Ventures QP Saad Sherida al-Kaabi. The QP official said: “We’re extremely proud to be receiving international recognition for this film, which shows our commitment and ability to combat climate change while supporting economic development in Qatar.”
‘Setting a New Standard’ picked up gold awards in the energy and nuclear issues category at World Fest Film and the public relations: technology category at the World Media Festival.
The second film, ‘The Challenges of the Al Shaheen’ tells the story of the Al Shaheen’s legacy - from a field that was once considered commercially unattractive – to Qatar’s largest offshore oil producer, now contributing one third of the country’s oil production. The film came out on top, taking the platinum award in the energy and nuclear issues category at the World Film Fest.
Maersk Oil Qatar Managing Director Lewis Affleck said: “These films are a great vehicle for showcasing to the world how by using our innovation and expertise, together with QP we have turned a challenging field into a commercial success.”
