The Hamad Medical Corporation has honoured Al Khor Hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology consultant Dr Mohamed IIyas Khan for his efforts in the hospital’s breastfeeding programme getting international recognition.The AKH programme, Qatar’s first integrated multidisciplinary breastfeeding programme called “Say Yes To Breastfeeding Initiative,” was awarded the BCLC Care Certificate by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA).

The award was in recognition of the AKH being one of the 34 top breastfeeding centres worldwide.
The centre is the second breastfeeding facility in the Gulf and Middle East to achieve the global accreditation by the Unicef.
Up to 900 breastfeeding cases from new mothers were received by the hospital in 2010.
“AKH’s breastfeeding programme is now globally recognised in the medical and scientific arenas as a pioneering programme that cares for the mother’s and child’s health. This has been achieved due to the relentless efforts exerted by the HMC leadership and its continuous support to all creative initiatives that help to achieve the corporation’s vision and mission,” AKH executive director Mohamed al-Jussaiman said.
He lauded the efforts of Dr Khan, who has been demonstrating continuous commitment and dedication, together with the hospital’s working teams, until the breastfeeding programme achieved global accreditation and the hospital was announced as a mother and child friend.
HMC public relations executive director Mohamed Mubarak al-Noaimi conveyed the congratulatory message from HMC managing director Dr Hanan al-Kuwari to Dr Khan wishing him all success in the programmes he introduced to the hospital while presenting him with a plaque in recognition for the high valued contributions he shared with HMC, in general and AKH in particular.
Dr Khan expressed happiness at the impressive achievement and conveyed thanks and appreciation to all who supported him in getting the recognition.
He referred to the important role of Women’s Hospital gynaecology and obstetrics department chairperson Dr Halima al-Tamimi, who welcomed the commissioning of a breastfeeding clinic at AKH.
He also appreciated the role played by the HMC media department for promoting the pioneering programme among the public.
Dr Khan also hailed Medical Education director Dr Abdulatif al-Khal for his diligent endeavours in supporting physicians’ and nurses’ continuous education in the field of breastfeeding.
Also present at a ceremony held at the AKH recently were Medical Staff chief Dr Hani al-Kilani and obstetrics and gynaecology department chairman Dr Hussein Shararah.
