Aruna Sairam
The Music Lovers Group will be presenting an Indian classical music concert by Padma Shri Aruna Sairam on April 15 at Ramada at 6pm.
The famous singer is described as the music ambassador of India for successfully taking Indian music to the global arena.
The Outlook magazine stated that if there is any singer who comes close to matching the purity of voice, diction, impeccable sruti alignment and frill-free singing of the late M S Subbulakshmi (the finest exponent of Carnatic music in India), it is Aruna Sairam.
Renowned for a style that is rooted in tradition while continuously evolving in the contemporary, she has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artistes, including Dominique Vellard, the French master of Gregorian chant, and Christian Bollmann of Germany.
The honours that have come her way include the Padma Shri, the Kalaimamani and the prestigious US Congress Proclamation of Excellence, wherein the US National Flag was flown atop the Capitol building and handed over to Aruna Sairam with a special Congressional proclamation recognising her musical contribution.
Born in Mumbai into a family with a deep love of music, her mother, the singer Rajalakshmi Sethuraman, was her first teacher in the art of Carnatic music of south India.
Her father, a music connoisseur, received the greatest musicians and dancers from northern and southern India in his home.
It was in this atmosphere that the young Aruna Sairam met Sangita Kalanidhi T Brinda, who trained her in the style of her own mentor, the great Veena Dhanammai, one of the most outstanding figures in Carnatic music.
Her appearances throughout the world include Carnegie Hall in New York, Le Theatre de la Ville in Paris, the Festival of World Sacred Music in Morocco, and the Music Academy in Chennai.
In India, Aruna Sairam has collaborated with the versatile singer Shankar Mahadevan and Mandolin maestro U Shrinivas among others.
