Guests dine under the candle lights at the The Pearl-Qatar during the Earth Hour |
A number of outlets on the island including Pampano, Liza, Tse Yang and Burj al Hamam supported the efforts as guests dined under the candle light.
Earth hour is a global movement created by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), encouraging millions of people from around the world to switch off the lights for one hour in support of the environmental action, while making a renewed commitment beyond the hour.
“Beyond the Hour” is an online platform launched this year to inspire positive actions beyond Earth Hour by encouraging individuals, businesses and governments to commit to ongoing environmental action.
The Pearl-Qatar spokesperson said: We are dedicated to keeping the Pearl-Qatar green and going “beyond the hour” fits perfectly with our values and beliefs. The island already has an established environmental affairs department which will continue to run projects and programmes with the aim of protecting the environment better.”
Also, by recreating a forest in the hotel’s vast lobby, W Doha observed the Earth Hour, sending a powerful message about hope for a brighter future for the planet.
The hotel turned off its lights and turned on the sounds and smells of a forest, right across the hotel’s vast two storey lobby, to raise awareness of deforestation and the depletion of the earth’s natural resources.
Last year, Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever as a record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action.
Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.
To underscore parent Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Incorporation’s dedication to environmental sustainability, W Doha also shared other energy-saving measures during Earth Hour among them were: turning off exterior signage lighting; dimming or turning off non-essential interior lighting; using candlelight in appropriate public areas such as restaurants and bars; and using in-room voicemail messages and in-room television messages to inform guests about Earth Hour observances.
Another hotel, newly opened Safir Doha Hotel also took part in the environmental awareness event. At the hotel, the initiative went far beyond one hour and several measures were taken to save electricity as non-essential lights were switched off or dimmed trhoughout the day.
Guests staying in the hotel rooms were also invited to join in the event.
Safir Doha general manager Mustapha Drief said: Safir Doha hotel made sure not to miss this annual event organised for a great cause. We are proud to take action on this day and contributing in spreading the awareness, which is very needed in terms of energy saving for our planet.”
