Funnyman Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias entertaining audience-members at Regency Halls last night
An audience of comedy fans – predominantly local enthusiasts – gave a standing ovation to Gabriel ‘Fluffy’ Iglesias as the Mexican-American treated them to a selection of his best imitations and jokes last night.
Performing as part of his world tour, Iglesias was joined by seven other comedians at Regency Halls, providing an eclectic and multicultural comedic look at various aspects of life.
Edwin San Juan, Larry Omaha, Dean Obeidallah, Fahad al-Butairi, Ibraheem al-Khairallah, local Qatari comedian Mohamed Fahad Kamal and Halal Bilal all performed as part of the evening, with headliner Fluffy closing the show.
The comedians were performing as part of the worldwide ‘Fluffy Tour’ which was brought to Qatar by Star Productions in conjunction with Qtel Virgin Mobile Services, Doha Film Institute, Luxury Events, Star Productions and Virgin Megastores.
The show was hailed as an indication of the strong local interest in comedy and the performing arts in general, with organisers expressing their interest in developing an annual comedy festival in Doha.
Last night, fans were treated to an extensive set, during which the eclectic mix of comedians touched on a variety of issues in their different styles.
While the comedians from the region spoke about issues related to their upbringing as Arabs and the quirky facts of life associated with their daily lives, others presented aspects of native American and Filipino community living.
San Juan’s set about his Filipino family was one of the funniest sections of the show, with tales of his uncle and mother’s failed attempts at pronunciation keeping the audience in stitches throughout.
But Fluffy was definitely the highlight of the evening, and his performance had the whole audience – and especially the local fans – close to tears with laughter.
The comedian’s incredible mimicry and sound effects drew gasps from the crowd, as they could not believe some of the noises the larger than life Mexican was capable of producing.
And he obviously enjoyed his trip to Doha and the rest of the region, expressing his desire to come back in the future.
Judging by the response of the audience at his show last night, this was a promise that will excite a huge number of comedy enthusiasts in Doha.
“That was a lot of fun – it’s great to have something different to do on a night in Doha,” said one audience member, adding “I am really looking forward to other comedy acts coming here and can’t wait to see who else comes to perform.”
