Qatar’s campaign in the WSF World Junior Squash Championships got off to a disastrous start when five of its six players in the men’s draw crashed out in the first round yesterday.
Only world number 7, Abdulla al-Tamimi, who has been given a bye in the first round, now remains in contention in the prestigious tournament being played at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
None of the Qataris even managed to take win a game, highlighting the gulf in class between the players as Sadam Mehawesh, Faisal al-Marri, Abdulwahab al-Ishaq and Abdulla l-Mass fell in straight sets.
The fifth Qatari player, Abdelrehman Abdelzaher, didn’t even take the court with the result that his opponent, Andres Felipe de Frutos, of Colombia, advanced to the second round by walkover.
Colombia’s Juan Camilo Vargas was in top form swatting aside Mehawesh, winning 11-3, 11-4, 11-7 in a match that barely lasted half an hour.

Playing to a plan, Vargas had the Qatari on the back foot right from the start and never looked back. A brief purple patch in the final game saw Mehawesh winning seven points, but that was the best he could do as Vargas stepped up a gear and quelled any possibility of a fightback.
In other matches, the USA’s Peter Dylan Murray beat al-Marri equally convincingly, winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-1, while Egypt’s Ahmed Abdel Khalek trounced al-Mass 11-2, 11-1, 11-3.
Meanwhile, in a clash between Gulf rivals, Kuwaiti Yousif Nizar Saleh defeated al-Ishaq 11-4, 11-2, 11-3.
India and Pakistan, however, had a great deal to cheer about as several players from the two countries made the second round
Pakistan’s Syed Bukhari showed the exit door to India’s Kush Kumar, winning 11-3, 11-5, 11-3 in the only  clash of the day featuring the two arch-rivals. Kumar had won the Asian Junior Championship last month in Iran.
Another Pakistani, Shahjahan Khan, defeated New Zealand’s Zachary Millar 11-3, 11-5, 11-8 to advance to the second round, while Tayyab Aslam got a walkover from Aryan Ahmed of Sweden. Danish Atlas Khan, who is favoured to go deep into the tournament, has been given a bye in the first round  as also Nasir Iqbal.
Among the Indian players who advanced were Abhishek Pradhan, who got a walkover from Colombia’s Mateo Vargas, Deepak Mishra, who ousted Kuwait’s Yousif Ali 11-4, 11-6, 12-10 and Vivek dinodia, who beat Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muhwate 11-1, 11-7, 11-1.
Mahesh Mangaonkar, who is ranked fourth in the world, enjoys a first round bye.
The tournament will pick up pace today with the women’s competition also scheduled to get underway.
The Egyptian duo of Marwan El Shorbagy and Nour El Sherbini are the top seeds in the men’s and women’s categories.
