Dwyane Wade made the game-winning shot. But he would not have had the chance to be the hero without a pair of clutch three-pointers by LeBron James.
James made a three-pointer to force overtime before Wade’s off-balance jumper with one-tenth of a second remaining gave the Miami Heat their 12th straight home win, a 93-91 victory over the pesky Indiana Pacers on Saturday night.
Wade scored 28 points and James added 27 for Miami, which led for just 12 seconds of the fourth quarter and the final tick of overtime but improved to 3-0 vs. Indiana this season.
“We have a lot of weapons,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We’re at our best when you’re not necessarily sure where that shot is coming from.”
“I feel like we gave the game away,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. “But give credit to Miami. LeBron made superior plays and Dwyane made superior plays when the game was on the line.”
The Pacers (23-15) lost their first two meetings with the Heat (31-9) by a combined 50 points but led for most of this one and held an 81-77 advantage and the ball late in regulation.
James intercepted a lazy backcourt pass by Dahntay Jones and dunked, then had a driving three-point play to give the Heat an 82-81 lead with 46 seconds left.
David West and Danny Granger each made two free throws to give
Indiana an 85-82 lead with 21 seconds to go. James - who has been criticized for his late-game failures - drilled a three-pointer to tie it with 10 seconds remaining.
Since joining the Heat last season, James had been just 1-of-5 on tying shots with less than 24 seconds to play.
“I understand what comes with it,” James said. “I’ve made game-winners, I’ve shot and missed game-winners.”
Baskets by West and Granger opened overtime, and Granger’s runner gave the Pacers a 91-86 lead with 2:03 left. James made another three-pointer, then found Chris Bosh for a jumper that tied it with 1:03 to play.
After Granger missed a three-pointer, Udonis Haslem grabbed a miss by James to set up Wade, who let the clock run down, used a fake to draw contact from Paul George and sank a 20-footer just before the buzzer.
