Roger Federer and Kim Clijsters were both challenged at Indian Wells on Sunday, but not enough to prevent the world’s second-ranked players from advancing.
Federer beat Igor Andreev of Russia 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) in a second-round match while Clijsters defeated Italy’s Sara Errani 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in their third round match in the $9 million dollar WTA and ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
“At the moment I feel good. I have had a good last six months, and I guess it’s given me a lot of confidence,” said Federer.
Federer is a three-time champion at Indian Wells and maybe that was the reason he felt so confident in the golf cart heading to the centre court stadium for his afternoon match.
“When I was on the cart driving to the tennis I felt really good,” Federer said. “At the end of the day, for me, really, it shows how you start the match and how you finish the match and all that before feelings I get don’t matter too much.
“I prefer to be relaxed and then play a good match than being all nervous.”
Federer had just four aces but he won 92 percent of this first service points.
Federer has won all four career matches against Andreev, dating back to 2004 when they met in the final of a clay court tournament in Switzerland.
In the tiebreaker, Federer set up match point by forcing Andreev hit a backhand long then clinched the win when Andreev pounded a forehand into the net.
Federer advances to the third round where he will play Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela.
Like Federer, Clijsters is ranked second in the world. She survived a second set scare by beating Italy’s Sara Errani 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in a third round match.
“It was not my best,” Clijsters said. “You have to be on your tippy toes. She moved me around. Today my tippy toes felt like bricks.”
Clijsters, who has won Indian Wells twice in 2005 and 2003, had six aces but also committed 13 double faults in the one hour, 52 minute match.
Clijsters next faces French 15th seed Marion Bartoli, who beat Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 6-2. Clijsters has reached the final in each of her last five tournaments.
She previously spent 20 weeks as the No. 1 player in the world and has a chance to regain the top spot if she makes it deep into the Indian Wells tournament.
Former world number one Andy Roddick got tournament off on a successful note Sunday by beating fellow American James Blake 6-3, 7-5.
“It was tough, but the numbers looked good afterwards,” Roddick said. “I felt like I was hitting the ball OK, so it worked out.”
Roddick and Federer were one of three top ten players competing on centre court Sunday. World number three Novak Djokovic overpowered Andrey Golubev 6-0, 6-4 in the night match.
In other men’s second round matches, France’s Richard Gasquet beat Pablo Cuevas 7-5, 6-3, Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych defeated Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-1 and Michael Llodra, of France, beat Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (8/6), 6-4.
