Fencing officials announcing the Qatar Grand Prix yesterday

The Qatar Fencing Federation will be organising the 6th Fencing Grand Prix for men and women at the Aspire Academy from February 11-14. There will be also a team World Club for the women.
In all, 287 fencers from 36 countries, including 136 in the men’s and 151 in the women’s categories, will be taking part in the event. Both defending champions German Joerg Fielder among the men and Ukrainian Yana Shemyakina among the women have confirmed their participation in the tournament.
Hosts Qatar will be fielding 23 fencers – 13 in the men’s and 10 in the women’s section for the tournament. Ezdan and Merweb Hotels have been chosen as the official hotels for the event.
Total prize money of $31,000 and $ 21,000 are up for grabs in the men’s and women’s section respectively.
“We have got a good response this season. This year, the number of countries participating, have increased to 36 from the previous 29. I’m confident that the event would be a great success,” said Khalid al-Yazidi, tournament manager.
