Activists shout anti-US slogans during a protest near the US embassy in Manila yesterday, as part of 20th year commemoration of the closing down of US bases in the country. The US military set up their naval and air presence in 1901 and 1903 respectively as they took colonial control of the Philippines. Although the bases closed down, US troops continue to take part in military exercises in the Philippines, as well as provide advisers and training under the Philippine-US security relationship.
