Baba Mainuddin ... will be missed
Thousands of Bangladeshis thronged the Mirpur Shah Ali Mazar premises in Dhaka yesterday for the first namaz-e-janaza of leading spiritual personality Syed Mainuddin Ahmed Maizbhandari.
People from different sections of society joined the janaza after streams followers had their last glimpses of the spiritual leader as the body was kept at his Mirpur Khanka Sharif residence overnight as it arrived from Singapore at on Wednesday.
Followers, including lawmakers and politicians representing both the ruling and opposition parties, joined the funeral procession that was also attended by his elder son Syed Saifuddin Ahmed Maizbhandari while Nurul Islam Maizbhandari led the prayers.
Fondly called Baba Mainuddin by admirers and devotees, the spiritual leader passed away at the age 75 at a Singapore Hospital.
Syed Mainuddin Ahmed spearheaded a campaign for spread of Islam, peace and interfaith harmony for the past several decades as the incumbent leading light of Maizbhandari Darbar Sharif or spiritual centre based at Fatikchhari of Chittagong.
Immediately after the janaza, the body was flown to his hometown Chittagong where it was kept for public viewing at his Chakbazar residence ahead of the second janaza at the port city’s Jamia-tul Falah Mosque after Asr prayer.
Syed Mainuddin will be laid to rest at the Maizbhandari Darbar Sharif at Fatikchhari after the third namaz-e-janaza following the Juma prayer today.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina mourned the death and recalled his outstanding role in preaching Islam highlighting its non- communal spirit at home and abroad.
“He played a significant role in preaching Islam and promoting interfaith harmony in Bangladesh and abroad,” the premier said in a condolence message where she also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
Born on February 10, 1938, Mainuddin Ahmed Maizbhandari was originally a banker by profession but quit the profession after his father and spiritual predecessor entrusted him with the charge of leading the Maizbhandari campaign to promote Islam.
