Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana praying at the grave of their slain father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, at their ancestral home at Tungipara in Gopalganj district yesterday

President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday paid tribute to Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka, commemorating the 36th death anniversary of Mujib and his family members.

On the fateful night of August 15, 1975, a group of junior army officers assassinated the chief architect of independence and all of his family members except elder daughter now Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and younger daughter Sheikh Rehana.
Parliament speaker Abdul Hamid, deputy leader in parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, ministers, advisers to the prime minister, members of Parliament, presidium members and leaders of Awami League, chiefs of the three services and top civil and military officials were present.
Later, the prime minister visited Banani cemetery where her mother, brothers and other family members and relatives were buried.
Hundreds of people from all strata of society, including leaders and workers of Awami League and its associate outfits, also gathered at the Banani cemetery to their respects.
Later, Sheikh Hasina flew to Tungipara in Gopalganj district where the ‘Father of the Nation’ was buried.
