Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its ally Jamaat-e-Islami have extended support to the countrywide 30-hour general strike on July 10-11, called by 12 Islamic parties.
BNP yesterday also announced countrywide demonstration and mass hunger strike in capital Dhaka protesting attacks on BNP leaders and workers including opposition chief whip Joynal Abedin Farroque as well as the arrests and filing of cases across the country during the 48-hour shutdown on Wednesday-Thursday.
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programmes yesterday.
The countrywide demonstration, including Dhaka city, will be held today and the mass hunger strike in the capital on July 13.
The mass hunger strike will be staged at the Engineers Institute premises in Dhaka city’s Ramna from 10am to 4pm.
Replying to a question, Fakhrul said they have extended total support to the July 10-11 general strike.
Jamaat-e-Islami extended its support to the upcoming 30-hour countrywide general strike on July 10 and 11 called by 12 Islamic parties.
Jamaat acting secretary general A T M Azharul Islam extended their support to the shutdown yesterday.
Speaking at a press conference, Azhar said Jamaat will stage demonstration across Bangladesh on Saturday demanding immediate release of political detainees, restoration of caretaker government system and inserting unflinching faith in Allah in the
constitution.
He called upon the countrymen to keep optional fasting on July 13 in protest against the government’s misrule.
