The residents of Hussainabad, near the Pakistani capital Islamabad, where the Bhoja Air plane crashed on Friday, are annoyed and perturbed because about 30,000 citizens have so far visited the village, invading their privacy.
Besides, as the village is almost 7km from the main highway, the single-lane road leading to the area is packed with traffic. As a result, the police have decided to stop traffic about 3km from the village. But still hundreds of people, including families, are reaching the place on foot.
Some local residents, including Aziz Khan and Obaidullah, said yesterday the incident had saddened the whole village but they were also shocked to see hundreds of people arriving there just for fun.
Obaidullah added: “My wife is in so much grief that she has not eaten anything for the last 48 hours but people visiting the village seemed unmoved by the tragic incident. They laugh all the time; many are invading our privacy by entering our houses and climbing up to the rooftops.”
Aziz Khan, who was carrying his brother with one of his legs in plaster, said because of the rush police had banned entry of vehicles in the village. “So I have to go outside the village to hire a cab to hospital.”
Other residents seemed happy with the visitors.
Azmatullah, a shopkeeper, said: “After the air crash, thousands of people have visited our village due to which the sale in my shop has increased phenomenally. People prefer buying Nimko and drinks,” he said.
Zohra Bibi, the resident of a house in which debris from the aircraft had fallen, added that she was happy to see people coming to the area.
However, she said the visitors demanded drinking water which was difficult to arrange because they fetched it from a well about half a kilometre away.
Mazhar Hussain, who had come there along with his family, said: “On the insistence of my son, I decided to visit the place along with my family.”
Nayyer Hussain, who works with an NGO and was visiting the site, said he was astonished at the attitude of the people. They are behaving as if they have come here for a picnic. It is also against the teachings of Islam.
“I saw people making pictures while standing on the debris.”
Traffic police assistant sub-inspector Faiz Gilani said soon after the air crash people rushed towards the place, hindering even the movement of security officials.
ASI Aurangzeb said VIPs and other influential people never listened to them and went till the end of the village in their vehicles. Another official, Mohammad Saqib said almost 30,000 people had visited the village within two days and it was difficult to control them.
A resident of the area, Ghulam Taqi, who had recently returned from Saudi Arabia, said he and his uncle Ghulam Raza were on the rooftop of their house when the plane crashed.
“We rushed there to rescue the victims and heard one of the male passengers shouting. We reached near the victim but could not pull him out of the huge pieces of debris that he was buried under. After a few minutes, he stopped calling.”
He alleged that police officials who reached the spot soon after the air crash started collecting the jewellery and other belongings of the victims. The villagers objected and exchanged harsh words with them, he added. “Later, when army personnel arrived we informed them about the matter and they forced the police to leave.”
A police officer said an army major had contacted them to convey the residents’ complaint that some of the policemen had stolen two bags belonging to the victims.
However, he was told that the allegation was wrong.
DSP (rural) Mohammad Tahir said though unscrupulous people are found anywhere, majority of the policemen were honest and they shifted all the belongings to the Koral police station which would be handed over to the heirs of the victims after completion of the due legal process.
He said police had been on duty for the last 48 hours to ensure protection of the belongings. “On Sunday, some belongings of a passenger Aeman Ikram were also found and shifted to the police station,” he said.
