 HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia and President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, attended the welcome dinner hosted yesterday by Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in Milan, on the sidelines of the 145th IOC session. The session was held in the city of Milan and brought together presidents of national Olympic committees, members of IOC, and presidents of international sports federations. The dinner provided an opportunity to exchange views on a number of issues related to Olympic affairs, within the framework of the side meetings accompanying the IOC session, which contribute to strengthening communication and co-ordination among sports leaders at the international level. The dinner was also attended by HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al-Thani, Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Foundation and a member of the IOC Education Commission.

The International Cricket Council is in talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board to resolve the boycott of its T20 World Cup match against India on February 15, AFP reported. Any clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan is one of the most lucrative in cricket, worth millions of dollars in broadcast, sponsor and advertising revenue. But the fixture was thrown into doubt after Pakistan’s government ordered the team not to play the match in Colombo. The Pakistan Cricket Board reached out to the ICC after a formal communication from the cricket’s world body, a source close to the developments told AFP. The ICC was seeking a resolution through dialogue and not confrontation, the source added. The 20-team tournament has been overshadowed by an acrimonious political build-up after Bangladesh, who refused to play in India citing security concerns, were replaced by Scotland. As a protest, Pakistan refused to face co-hosts India in their Group A fixture. Pakistan, who edged out Netherlands in the tournament opener yesterday, will lose two points if they forfeit the match and also suffer a significant blow to their net run rate. India skipper Suryakumar Yadav said this week that his team would travel to Colombo for the clash. Pakistan and India have not played bilateral cricket for more than a decade, and meet only in global or regional tournaments. England’s Salt passed fit for opener Hard-hitting batsman Phil Salt was passed fit as England named their team for their first match in the T20 World Cup. He will open the batting alongside wicketkeeper Jos Buttler against Nepal at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium today in Group C. Salt missed Tuesday’s third T20 against Sri Lanka with a back spasm but trained successfully on Friday and will take his place at the top of the order. Tom Banton, fresh from a sparkling 54 off 33 balls against Sri Lanka five days ago, is preferred to Ben Duckett and will bat at number four. Left-arm fast bowler Luke Wood gets the nod ahead of Jamie Overton and joins express man Jofra Archer and Sam Curran in the seam attack. England have opted to have four spinners at their disposal with spearheads Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson backed up by all-rounders Jacob Bethell and Will Jacks. 

Al-Attiyah suffers broken wheel and resultant suspension damage while leading the event Abdulaziz al-Kuwari and his brother Nasser ended a 10-year wait for a third FIA Middle East Rally Championship victory when they secured a second win at the Qatar International Rally yesterday. The Qatari duo trailed runaway leader Nasser Saleh al-Attiyah for three-quarters of the event but hit the front when the defending champion suffered a broken wheel and resultant suspension damage after nine of the event’s 12 gravel stages to the north of Doha. From then on, the Sarrazin Skoda Fabia RS duo stayed clear of trouble over the remaining three special stages to follow up their 2012 victory in Qatar at the wheel of a Mini S2000. Al-Kuwari had also notched up success on a candidate event in Oman back in 2014 and picked up maximum MERC points in Cyprus the same year. His brother only came back as a stand-in co-driver for this event after announcing his retirement from the sport last year. The delighted Qatari had a flattering winning margin of 5min 08.8sec. He said: “Fourteen years I didn’t win the event and, 14 years, my brother was never next to me on this event. I brought him back. I said he had to retire at home. It was good to come back and win the rally. I never pushed 100%. I never had a penalty or a puncture, maybe one of the only ones. There is a limit you have to stay below. The team did a great job. Thanks to the QMMF and Sarrazin Motorsport. Now, for sure, I will ask the QMMF if I can continue the Middle East championship. I think I deserve it. I am always there.” Nasser al-Kuwari added: “When my brother tried to push me to come back, I had a feeling that we were going to win it. This will be my last race and we have won it. I am so happy for my brother, my father, my family, the QMMF. I am proud of my brother. This is the end of my career.” Al-Attiyah’s goal of a 19th Qatar victory fizzled out on the road section after stage nine. The Qatari and co-driver Candido Carrera had completed the stage with a broken rear-left wheel and damaged suspension on their Autotek Skoda Fabia RS. They were forced to change the wheel and make emergency repairs on the side of the road after the stage but the wheel was hanging at an angle and there was a small fire when they began the return to Lusail. The Qatari tried a couple of times to make further repairs and made it back to Lusail within his maximum lateness, albeit on three rotating wheels, before throwing in the towel. He admitted that he thought he had a puncture and drove to the end of the stage, not realising that the wheel had broken and damaged the suspension. Saudi Arabia’s Hamza Bakhashab and his Irish co-driver Lorcan Moore applied the pressure on local youngster Mohammed al-Marri and Frenchman Pierre Delorme as the leg progressed and took full advantage of a large time loss for the young Qatari on stage 10 to secure second overall in a Jameel Motorsport Toyota GR Yaris Rally2. It was the Saudi’s third ever special stage rally after the WRC event in Saudi Arabia last November and Oman last month. Al-Marri delivered a memorable performance on his first outing in a Citroën C3 Rally2 but was forced to retire after the 10th stage with a broken suspension rod. Nasser Khalifa al-Atya and Ziad Chehab finished on the final step of the podium in their Motortune Ford Fiesta and al-Atya claimed maximum points in the FIA Master Driver category for the second event in succession.Shaker Jweihan completely dominated the FIA MERC2 category with Mustafa Juma in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X for a second time in three weeks. Despite a bent suspension arm for the opening loop of stages, the Jordanian finished fourth and romped to class victory by 13min 20.8sec. Rashid al-Muhannadi and Gary McElhinney moved into a useful lead in the FIA MERC4 category on the first stage of the morning when Khalifa Saleh al-Attiyah was sidelined with technical problems. The defending champions increased their advantage as the day progressed in a QMMF-backed Peugeot 208 but a penultimate stage retirement with transmission issues enabled rivals Ahmad Shaheen al-Muhannadi and Taha al-Zadjali to take the lead. They then rolled in the last stage and gifted victory and fifth place to Nouef al-Sowaidi and Aisvydas Paliukenas. Ahmed al-Kuwari and Baptiste Cerrato finished sixth in the second of the Peugeots. The Italian duo of Christiano Gabbarrini and Alessandro Forni were seventh in a Yamaha Quaddy YXZ 1000R and the Omani duo of Zakariya al-Aamri and Mohammed al-Mazrui finished eighth in a Subaru Impreza N14 and picked up points for second in MERC2. Charbel Chebly drove well on his Qatar debut with Carlos Hanna, finished third in MERC2 and ninth overall. Mohammed Mansoor Parol (Mitsubishi), Shadi El-Fakih (Renault) and Jassim al-Muqahwi (Mitsubishi) rounded off the 12 finishers.Abdullah al-Rawahi retired before the restart. The Omani had suffered several time-consuming punctures during leg one and had back Qatar’s Bassem Hemeida claimed 400m gold medal at the 12th Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tianjin, China, Saturday. He clocked 47.27 seconds to top the field, with China’s Chiyu Zheng finishing runner-up in 47.34 seconds. Iran’s Arash Sayyari secured third place in 47.59 seconds. 

Francesca Lollobrigida powered to victory in the women’s 3,000 metres ‌speed skating Saturday, bringing ‌Italy its ‍first gold medal of the Milano Cortina Winter Games and ending the Netherlands’ run of three consecutive Olympic ‍titles in the discipline. Norway’s Ragne Wiklund and Canada’s Valerie Maltais joined her on the podium as the speed skating programme got underway at the Milano Speed Skating ‌Stadium. Lollobrigida clocked three minutes and 54.28 seconds to finish 2.26 seconds ahead of Wiklund. Skating ‍in her fourth Olympics, Lollobrigida ‌produced an inspired performance to secure her first gold medal, adding to the 3,000m silver and mass start bronze she won at Beijing in 2022. Celebrating her 35th birthday, she carried the weight of home expectations and lived up to them. Her victory ended a formidable ​Dutch legacy in ‌the 3,000m. The Netherlands famously swept the podium at PyeongChang ‍2018, and Irene Schouten won gold at Beijing 2022 before retiring. In Milan, Marijke Groenewoud and Joy Beune were again seen as leading Dutch contenders to extend ​that dominance, as was Wiklund – but Lollobrigida had other ideas. The Netherlands remains the sport’s powerhouse, with a record 48 Olympic gold medals – well clear of the US (30) and Norway (28). Lollobrigida’s victory was Italy’s third Olympic gold in speed skating. Meanwhile Olympic medallists Alex ‌Hall of the United States and Jesper ‌Tjader of Sweden made ‍it through the freeskiing slopestyle qualifying round at the Milano Cortina Winter Games to set up a showdown in next week’s final in the ‍Italian Alps. Hall, the defending champion, was one of three Americans to make the field of 12 who will compete for medals in the mountain town of Livigno, near the Swiss border. His teammates Mac Forehand and Konnor Ralph also advanced. The 27-year-old Hall sounded relieved after ‌securing his spot in Tuesday’s final after two smooth runs under sunny skies. “It’s always nerve-wracking during the qualifiers,” Hall said. “There is ‍a little bit of strategy involved. “‌You don’t want to show all your cards. You don’t want to try something too hard that you might not land. In the finals, you just go all out,” he added. The slopestyle event features skiers who slide across rails and perform aerial tricks to impress the judges with difficulty and originality. The best score from each of the two runs determines the rankings. Tjader, the bronze medallist at the 2022 Winter ​Games in Beijing, tumbled ‌off a rail in his initial run, putting him in danger of elimination. A strong second ‍run vaulted the 31-year-old to third place. “Everybody did amazing runs so I really had to step up to make the final,” Tjader said. “I’m really proud of my run. I did a few new tricks that I haven’t done on a ​slopestyle run before,” Tjader added. Norway’s Birk Ruud, the first men’s rider of the day, executed a flawless performance and finished at the top of the pack.

All-rounder Will Jacks said yesterday that under-fire England T20 World Cup captain Harry Brook had “100 percent” support from the players after going through a “tough time”. The 26-year-old Brook, in charge at a global tournament for the first time, has recently been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. He last month had to apologise for being involved in an altercation with a nightclub bouncer during England’s white ball tour of New Zealand last year, something that had been a “terrible mistake”. Jacks has been close to Brook since they were room-mates with England Under-19s. “Obviously, it’s been a tough time and that’s been well documented in the media,” Jacks told reporters ahead of team training in Mumbai on the eve of the tournament.“I wasn’t actually in New Zealand, so I didn’t know anything about it. “He’s obviously made the wrong decision, but he’s accepted that. He’s obviously making amends on the pitch, and we all back him 100 percent.” Brook, a richly gifted run-scorer, has an early chance to shift the focus back on to his batting in England’s opening match against Nepal in Mumbai tomorrow. “He wants his cricket to do the talking,” said Jacks. England come into the World Cup in form and heartened by a 3-0 T20 series win in Sri Lanka this week. In the preceding ODI series against the same opposition, the explosive Brook bludgeoned 136 off just 66 balls. ‘Team unity strong’ “It’s not so much we are taking momentum from that, but team unity, feeling strong within ourselves,” said Jacks. “We have been performing well over the last 12 months, since Harry’s become captain, and we’re very happy with that. What we did in the last few weeks in Sri Lanka is another stepping stone. “We come into here full of confidence and belief that we can go a long way in this tournament. “India, on home soil, I think everyone knows who’s favourites.”England are expected to make the Super Eight stage from a Group C that also features two-time winners West Indies, debutants Italy and Scotland.

Captain Salman Agha warned yesterday that his Pakistan team must bring their “A-game” to the T20 World Cup to reach the knockout stages after forfeiting their group match against India. The tournament has been overshadowed by an acrimonious political build-up as Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland and Pakistan refused to face co-hosts India in their Group A fixture. Pakistan will lose two points for the forfeit and also suffer a significant blow to their net run rate, leaving little margin for error.Even one abandoned match due to bad weather could complicate their path to the next round. Pakistan open their campaign today in Sri Lanka against the Netherlands and will also face Namibia and the United States. “We need to be cautious and bring our A-game,” Agha told reporters, admitting Pakistan have limited experience of the Netherlands and “don’t know many” of their players. “We intend to unleash all our spin options because we feel they are vulnerable against quality spin,” he said. The 2009 champions will lean heavily on their explosive opening pair Fakhar Zaman and Saim Ayub, with Agha slated for number three. Former skipper Babar Azam - who has struggled for form - slots in at number four. “Babar has been working overtime on his game. He’s a key player in these conditions and can change a match in a few overs. We depend on him heavily,” Agha said. Pakistan are on a high after a 3-0 whitewash of Australia at home. The team will seek advice from their government if they reach the knockout phase and meet arch-rivals India.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav admitted yesterday “there will be nerves” when India open their T20 World Cup campaign in front of more than 30,000 fanatical home supporters in Mumbai, but vowed to give them “entertainment”. The co-hosts start their Group A campaign against the United States at a packed Wankhede stadium tonight. Suryakumar is only too aware that India, the top-ranked T20 team in the world, are overwhelming favourites to retain their title. But he said his team will try to feed off the positive vibes from a billion-plus home supporters and not be crushed by the huge weight of expectation. “When you’re playing at home there is always an added pressure. I’m not running away from the fact,” Suryakumar told reporters ahead of India’s final training session yesterday. “To be honest, there will be nerves, there will be pressure, but if you see the positive side of it, there’ll be a lot of cheer around. “There’s so many people coming to watch in the stadiums, I’ve told my boys the same thing, 30,000-35,000 people coming and so many watching at home.“Let’s give them a good time. Let’s give them entertainment.” India know that their opening opponents, the United States, caused the biggest upset of the 2024 tournament when they beat Pakistan in a super over, and Suryakumar said no team would be taken lightly. “I don’t see any weak teams in the competition. All 20 teams are very much capable of playing some good cricket,” he said.“In this format, one or two batters can make a difference. Or it takes one or two bowlers to have a good 24 balls on any given day.“So we will have to play the same way as we’ve been playing against all the teams.” The USA’s middle order batsman Sanjay Krishnamurthi said it was an honour to play the opening match against the hosts in Mumbai.“I think for all Americans, this is a special moment for our country,” said the Oregon-born 22-year-old. “To be able to come here and play cricket in one of the most iconic stadiums against one of the best teams in the world, I think it’s going to inspire a future generation of cricketers to rise through the ranks in American cricket.” In a blow to Suryakumar’s plans, India fast bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana was ruled out of the tournament late yesterday after suffering a knee injury in a warm-up match two days before. “Following consultations with a specialist and subsequent scans, the BCCI medical team deemed him unfit to participate in the tournament,” India said.The 24-year-old will be replaced by experienced fast bowler Mohammad Siraj. A veteran of 45 Tests, the 31-year-old Siraj has not played a T20 international since July 2024.
