The Qatar Basketball Federation has announced the schedule for the Men’s General League Championship for the new 2026–2027 sports season. The competition will tip off on Saturday, October 10, 2026, with the participation of nine clubs: Al Khor, Al Rayyan, Qatar, Al Sadd, Al Gharafa, Al Ahli, Al Shamal, Al Wakrah, and Al Arabi. The first round will continue until Monday, November 9. The Men’s General League begins with a single‑round league format before moving into the second stage, which will adopt a knockout system to determine the season’s champion. The first round features 36 matches across nine rounds, according to the program approved by the Federation, with games hosted at Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan arenas. Al Arabi enters the new season as the defending champion of the last three editions, raising its tally to 11 titles in the history of the General League. Al Rayyan leads the all‑time record with 18 titles, followed by Qatar with 7. Al Sadd, Al Gharafa, Al Shamal, and the former Army Club each hold two titles, while Al Ahli has one, won in the 2000–2001 season. The opening round kicks off on Saturday, October 10, with two matches at Al Gharafa Arena: Al Rayyan vs. Al Khor at 6:00 p.m., followed by Al Sadd vs. Qatar at 8:00 p.m. The round continues on Monday, October 12, with Al Gharafa vs. Al Ahli at 6:00 p.m. and Al Wakrah vs. Al Shamal at 8:00 p.m., also at Al Gharafa Arena. Al Arabi will rest in the first round. Round Two will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, October 14–15. Al Rayyan Arena will host Qatar vs. Al Ahli at 7:00 p.m. and Al Gharafa vs. Al Wakrah at 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday. On Thursday, Al Gharafa Arena will stage Al Khor vs. Al Sadd at 6:00 p.m. and Al Arabi vs. Al Rayyan at 8:00 p.m. Al Shamal will rest in this round. The Gulf Football Federation (GFF) on Wednesday signed of a strategic partnership agreement with Al Nasr Trading Company, to be the official partner of the Gulf Cup 27, which will be hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from September 23 to October 6, 2026, as part of the ongoing cooperation between the two sides and in support of the progress of Gulf football.The signing ceremony, which took place at the headquarters of the GFF in Doha, was attended by Jassim Sultan al-Rumaihi, Secretary General of GFF, along with Yousef Faisal al-Rashid, CEO of Al-Nasr Trading Company, and a number of federation officials and company executives.On this occasion, al-Rumaihi said: “We are proud of this partnership with one of the leading commercial companies, which has demonstrated over the past years a clear commitment to supporting the Gulf Federation’s tournaments and various events. Aspire Academy brought together fencers from six nations for a training camp ahead of the upcoming season. Fencers from the Netherlands, Greece, Argentina, Malaysia, Thailand and Saudi Arabia joined local Qatari fencers alongside Aspire Academy student-athletes and graduates.Among the 66 fencers who gathered were Saudi Arabia’s Khalifah al-Omairi, who won bronze in the epee at the recent World Championships in Hong Kong, and Dutch athlete Tristan Tulen, who has competed at the Olympics and won the Doha Grand Prix in January.The week-long training camp featured 12 sessions totalling 36 hours, overseen by 16 coaches from both Aspire Academy and overseas. It included work on footwork, technical skills, as well as strength and conditioning.In addition to the coaching sessions, several social activities were organised for the visitors, including a meal at Souq Waqif, a trip to the cinema, and badminton and swimming sessions. Hugo Dergal, Senior Fencing Coach for epee at Aspire Academy, said there had been very positive feedback from the visiting fencers and coaches as well as the local athletes.“We are delighted that they have been able to enjoy the Aspire Academy facilities: from our fencing hall to our gyms for physical preparation and the recovery centre,” he said. “My hope is that we can build on this camp, make it bigger, and invite more fencers from not just the Middle East but from around the globe.”He added that the Aspire Academy student-athletes have learnt many valuable lessons from the training camp. “During the training sessions, the professionals are very disciplined and always engaged; this is an area our student-athletes can learn from,” he explained.“Even if we are tired, even if it's a long session, we need to keep our focus and maintain that discipline, as that will help us in competition. This is a chance for our student-athletes to get a first-hand look at exactly what it means to be a top-class fencer.”“They can see how some of the very best train, how they are always discussing their sessions and taking ideas from those around them. All of this means they can understand the sport better and hopefully means they can progress to the highest possible levels.”Dutch fencer Tristan Tulen was impressed with the potential of the Aspire Academy fencers. “I was really happy to accept the invite, especially because the Aspire facilities are really first-class, so I accepted without hesitation,” he said.“They're (Aspire Academy fencers) very professional in many ways at such a young age. So I think they have strong potential to develop into international players in the future. They have the same personality as me; I also get flared up when I lose a match, and I use it to evaluate what I have done and use it as motivation for my next encounter. I would encourage them to do the same.”Among the local fencers taking part in the training camp was Qatar’s top fencer Ali Turki Owaida, who ended last season by becoming the first Qatari to reach the last 64 at the World Fencing Championships.His next challenge is competing for Qatar at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, which begin on 19 September, and he is determined to build on his recent success.“It’s easy for a person to see one result and be happy and satisfied, but my goal and those of Aspire Academy and the national team are always to improve,” he insisted. “I am now determined to improve my understanding of how to read the sport better and how to approach a match with a better mentality. These are the things that differentiate world-class players from others.”Ali Turki Owaida will be joined by five other Aspire Academy graduates and two current student-athletes for a training camp in Japan starting on September 13 ahead of the fencing competition at the Asian Games, which begins a week later.

Iran set up a final showdown with France at the U17 World Volleyball Championship Doha 2026 after beating Argentina 3-0 in the semi-finals on Friday. In what was an entertaining clash, Iran won 25-19, 29-27, 25-13. Iran dominated the opening set before the second set produced a fiercely contested battle that extended into extra points, with Iranians eventually edging it. Iran then maintained their superiority in the third set, winning it by a wide margin to confirm their place in the final.Iran have continued their impressive run in the tournament with an unbeaten record. They topped Pool E with a perfect nine points from three consecutive victories before defeating Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the Round of 16. They then secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Pakistan in the quarter-finals in a marathon encounter that went to the deciding set.Argentina's campaign, meanwhile, came to an end in the semi-finals after they produced a strong run in the tournament. They eliminated Italy, the champions of the inaugural edition, before overcoming Poland 3-0 in the quarter-finals. France had already secured the first spot in the final after defeating Brazil 3-1 in the semi-finals, coming from behind after losing the opening set. France reached the final after topping Pool A with a perfect record of three wins against Tunisia, Qatar and Venezuela. They then defeated Spain in the Round of 16 and Romania 3-0 in the quarterfinals.The final of the second edition of the championship will be played on Saturday at 5pm at the Women's Sports Hall in Aspire Zone. The third-place playoff between Brazil and Argentina will take place at 2pm. The final day of competition will also be attended by Fabio Azevedo, President of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), who is visiting Qatar as part of the strong relations and ongoing cooperation between the FIVB and the Qatar Volleyball Association.
