Ethiopia’s Tadese Takele successfully defended his Tokyo Marathon title Sunday, edging Kenya’s Geoffrey Toroitich in a sprint finish to cross the line in 2hr 3min 37sec. Takele finished with the same official time as Toroitich after a dramatic battle for the line, with Kenya’s Alexander Mutiso just one second further behind in third place. “I knew that the final stage would be decisive,” said the 23-year-old Takele. “Around 41km I wanted to wait and see what would happen and then I made my move right before the finish.” Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei won the women’s race in 2:14:29, a new course record. Ethiopia’s Berukan Welde was second in 2:16:36, followed by her countrywoman Hawi Feysa in 2:17:39. In warm, dry conditions in the Japanese capital, a men’s leading pack including Takele, Toroitich, Mutiso and Kenya’s Daniel Mateiko broke away around the 37km mark. Takele made a late move and managed to stay in front despite a last-gasp challenge from Toroitich. “Today’s race was a great one,” said Takele. “There was intense and positive competition, and I’m truly happy that I was able to win.” The men’s field was weakened by the withdrawal through injury of Kenya’s Timothy Kiplagat and Ethiopia’s Milkesa Mengesha in the lead-up to the race. In the women’s competition, Kosgei was in a class of her own and finished more than two minutes clear of her nearest rival. Kosgei, the Tokyo Marathon champion and Olympic silver medallist in 2021, has said she will compete for Turkey at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. “We have a lot of athletes in Kenya,” said Kosgei. “I want some young generation to follow my step to join me in Turkey.”

McLaughlin-Levrone, the two-time Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion and the second fastest woman ever in the flat 400m, announced that she is expecting a child. The 26-year-old American broke the news on social media with a series of photos with her husband Andre Levrone.The pictures also show the couple admiring scans of the baby. McLaughlin-Levrone is track and field's biggest woman star, having shown at the world championships in Tokyo last year that she can transfer her talents from the hurdles to the 400m flat with stunning success.In winning the title, she became the first woman since 1985 to break the 48-second barrier and nearly eclipsed a 41-year-old world record set by Marita Koch of the former East Germany.McLaughlin-Levrone won the Olympic 400m hurdles title at the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Games. She will likely miss the biggest event of the 2026 calendar, the new World Athletics Ultimate Championships, being held in Budapest on September 11-13.

Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo, the reigning Chicago Marathon champion, won his third consecutive men's crown on Saturday at the World Cross Country Championships.The 25-year-old completed the hat-trick over 10 kilometers in a winning time of 28min 18sec with Ethiopia's Berihu Aregawi 18sec back in a third consecutive runner-up finish, with Kenya's Daniel Ebenyo third in 28:45.Kiplimo became only the fourth man to win three world cross country titles in a row after Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele (2002-2006) and the Kenyans Paul Tergat (1995-1999) and John Ngugi (1986-1989)."To win three times, I'm so happy about it," Kiplimo said. "I think it's about the consistency in your training. Another thing it's about is believing in yourself."Kiplimo was last year's London Marathon runner-up in 2hr 3min 37sec in his debut at the 26.2-mile distance, then captured the Chicago Marathon in 2:02:23 last October, a quick turnaround that added to the challenge of defending his title."Today was the hardest one," Kiplimo said.Agnes Ngetich, the world 10km record holder, took the women's title in 31:28 over 10km to deliver Kenya a 10th consecutive women's crown at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.Ngetich defeated Uganda's Joy Cheptoyek by 42 seconds in a dominant performance with Ethiopia's Senayet Getachew third in 32:13 over a course featuring sand, water and mud zones plus barriers resembling fallen logs.In the men's final, Kiplimo was second by two seconds at the mid-race mark and with two kilometers remaining was alongside Aregawi and world half marathon runner-up Ebenyo.Kiplimo surged ahead by eight seconds on Aregawi entering the final kilometer and raced across the finish line to cheers.He does not expect to seek a fourth world cross country crown as he will turn his attention to the marathon."I think now maybe this one is going to be the last one because of the marathon... because I'll be training for the marathon," Kiplimo said.Aregawi, the 10,000m runner-up at the 2024 Paris Olympics, had lost by nine seconds to Kiplimo in 2023 and by only three seconds in 2024 in the two prior editions of the event.Jimmy Gressier, the Frenchman who had been tipped for a podium finish after his shock 10,000m victory on the track at last year's world championships, was a disappointing 15th.Ngetich dominatesKenya's Beatrice Chebet, the reigning 5,000 and 10,000m champion, did not seek a third consecutive women's title because she is beginning a 2026 maternity break.That left Ngetich to continue Kenya's title streak and she did so in epic fashion.Ngetich grabbed the early lead and began to stretch a gap after two kilometers, pulling away to run alone through the Florida pine trees and reach the midpoint at 15:20.Ngetich led by 35 seconds after seven kilometers and stayed in command to the finish to win by the second-largest margin in the race's history, trailing only the 1980 victory of Norway's Greta Waitz by 44 seconds over 4.82km.It was Ngetich's first cross country competition since winning on home soil in last February's Sirikwa Classic.Ngetich was third behind Chebet at the 2023 worlds and fourth in a Kenyan top-four sweep in 2024.Ethiopia swept the men's and women's team titles with Kenya second and Uganda third in each.

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has announced that it will participate with a delegation of 82 male and female athletes in the 6th edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games, which will be held in the Saudi capital Riyadh from November 7 to 21, with more than 3,000 athletes from 57 countries expected to take part.During a press conference held at the QOC Headquarters on Thursday, Mr. Khalifa Jabor Al-Naimi, Deputy Head of the Qatari Administrative Delegation, confirmed that Qatar will compete in 16 sports: Athletics, Duathlon, 3x3 Basketball, Karate, Equestrian, Wrestling, Volleyball, Handball, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Judo, Weightlifting, Camel Racing, Swimming, Fencing, and Para Athletics.Al-Naimi highlighted that Qatar’s participation in the Islamic Solidarity Games reflects the QOC and the State of Qatar’s commitment to being actively present in Islamic, Arab, and Asian sporting events, and to strengthening sporting ties among nations.He added that the Qatari teams have completed their preparations through intensive training programs supervised by their respective federations in coordination with the QOC. He emphasized that the Qatari delegation aims to deliver outstanding performances and reach the podium, particularly in athletics, weightlifting, handball, and volleyball — the sports in which Qatar is expected to perform most strongly.Al-Naimi acknowledged the strong level of competition, given the large number of participating nations. He noted that the main objective is to maximize the technical benefits of the Games by offering opportunities to a wide range of Qatari athletes — both youth athletes being groomed for the Doha 2030 Asian Games and elite athletes capable of competing for medals.He concluded by reviewing Qatar’s proud history in the Islamic Solidarity Games, which began in Mecca 2005 with the first gold medal. In Konya 2022, Qatar maintained the same total with an improvement in quality — 4 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze. The 2026 Diamond League season will begin in Doha on May 8 and finish at the two-day series final in Brussels on September 4-5. The world’s greatest athletes will return to the global stage next year as they embark on another continent-crossing Wanda Diamond League campaign in 2026.Following another record-breaking year in 2025, many of the sport’s biggest names will be hoping to make history once again as athletics’ premier one-day series returns for its 17th season. As in previous years, athletes will compete for points at 14 meetings as they bid to qualify for the series final in Brussels and a shot at the iconic Diamond Trophy.The 2026 Road to the Final will begin in Asia, with Doha hosting the season opener on May 8 before back-to-back Chinese meetings in Shanghai and Xiamen. The African leg of the series will take place in Rabat on May 31, before the first European meeting of the season in Rome the following week.After stops in Stockholm, Oslo and Paris, the world’s biggest stars will head to Eugene on the US west coast for a meeting which has seen five world records in the past three seasons alone. The series then returns to Europe for meetings in Monaco and London, before the Road to the Final enters the home straight in August.Lausanne, Silesia and Zurich will be the last stops before the world’s biggest stars assemble in Brussels for the Wanda Diamond League Final on September 4-5. Qatar added two more medals to its tally at the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.In athletics, runner Dana Salem captured silver in the women’s 100m race, clocking 11.60 seconds. Gold went to Emirati sprinter Arwa Ashar with a time of 11.45 seconds, while China’s Xinyi Yan took bronze in 11.79 seconds.Qatar’s show jumping team also won silver with Suhaim Hamad al-Yafei, Amer Hamad al-Mansouri, Mohammed Issa al-Bukhari and Abdulaziz Saud Fakhro delivering an impressive performance to finish second behind Jordan. Saudi Arabia claimed the bronze medal in the team event.Qatar’s overall medal count at the Games now stands at three: one gold and two silver, following Idris Abubaker’s victory in the 110-meter hurdles on Thursday.In beach volleyball, the Qatari duo of Ahmed Ziad and Musa Al-Khair lost to Indonesia in a tightly contested match, 15-21, 21-18, 10-15. Despite the loss, they advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will face Kazakhstan.In golf, Qatar remained in 12th place in the team standings after the second day, while Daniel Sokolov dropped to 22nd individually and Camille Ben Rokia is in 38th place.Meanwhile, the youth volleyball team was eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 0-3 defeat to Chinese Taipei. Qatar is participating in 16 sports at the Games with a delegation of 67 athletes. The disciplines include athletics, badminton, basketball (3x3), equestrian (show jumping), golf, judo, jiu-jitsu, cycling, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, wrestling, volleyball, beach volleyball, and boxing.
