‘Right to development key to Qatar’s national policies’

Qatar has said that the right to development is a fundamental human right, noting that its recognition was enshrined in the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development in 1986. Forty years after the declaration was adopted, Qatar said, its principles and standards continue to serve as a cornerstone for addressing many of the challenges facing the world today.

 

This came in a statement delivered yesterday by Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Abdulrahman Mohammed Fakhroo during a panel discussion on the right to development held to mark the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development, under agenda item 3 of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

 

He affirmed that, within the framework of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, promoting the right to development should remain an international and national priority, with due consideration given to the importance of implementing the development agenda in accordance with the provisions of the declaration and States’ obligations under international human rights instruments.

 

In this regard, he said, Qatar has adopted an ambitious national vision for comprehensive development, namely Qatar National Vision 2030, and has worked to implement it through national development strategies.

 

This has resulted in significant national achievements and steady progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, while Qatar has maintained its leading position in numerous international and regional development indicators.
