Qatar has strongly condemned the Houthi attacks on civilian and economic sites in the Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, which injured 73 people, including women and children, and disrupted operations at several energy facilities.

In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the attacks as a reprehensible act of aggression and an unacceptable disregard for civilian lives and regional security.

The ministry said the strikes constituted a blatant violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, a clear breach of international law and a dangerous escalation threatening the security and stability of the region.

Qatar also condemned the Houthis’ continued targeting of commercial vessels in the Red Sea and their threat to the security, safety and freedom of international maritime navigation.

It called on the international community to assume its responsibilities, take a firm stand against such violations and ensure the implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 on security and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

The ministry stressed that freedom of navigation through international waterways was a right guaranteed under international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It reiterated Qatar’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its support for all legitimate measures taken by the kingdom to protect its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and interests. It affirmed that Saudi Arabia’s security was an integral part of Qatar’s security and the collective security of the Gulf Co-operation Council states.

According to Reuters, the overnight missile and drone attacks sparked fires and temporarily halted operations at several energy installations in southern Saudi Arabia. The Houthis said they had targeted Abha International Airport, King Khalid airbase and facilities belonging to Saudi Aramco.

The attacks came amid renewed fighting in Yemen and Houthi efforts to expand operations around the Bab al-Mandab strait, a crucial shipping passage linking the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The group declared a maritime blockade of Saudi Arabia in July and has since stepped up attacks on Saudi ships and energy infrastructure.

Qatar wished the injured a speedy recovery and prayed for the safety of Saudi Arabia and its people.
