Qatar has won the presidency of the Permanent Arab Committee on International Humanitarian Law, becoming the first country to hold the position since the committee was established in 2025.

 

The Ministry of Justice said HE Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and Chairman of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law Saeed bin Abdullah al-Suwaidi was elected chairman of the Arab committee during the 166th regular session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level in Cairo.

 

The chairman is elected by direct vote from among candidates nominated by the heads of national committees concerned with international humanitarian law in Arab League member states or their representatives with relevant expertise. 

 

The committee was established following a proposal submitted by Qatar and approved by the Arab League Council at its 163rd regular ministerial session.

 

It serves as a permanent Arab framework for strengthening co-operation and co-ordination among national committees, exchanging expertise and best practices and promoting respect for the rules and principles of international humanitarian law.

 

HE the Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali bin Issa al-Hassan al-Mohannadi said Qatar’s election reflected Arab recognition of its efforts to support justice, the rule of law and humanitarian action.

 

He said it also demonstrated growing confidence in Qatar’s legal and judicial institutions and the progress made in developing a robust legislative and institutional framework.

 

The minister described the committee’s establishment and Qatar’s assumption of its presidency as a significant milestone in joint Arab efforts to uphold international humanitarian law, protect people and preserve human dignity during conflicts and crises.

 

He said Qatar’s work in this field was supported by extensive institutional efforts at the national level, particularly through the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, which promotes respect for and awareness of international humanitarian law.
