Qatar strongly condemned Iran’s targeting of the Saudi tanker SIDR in the Strait of Hormuz and its renewed attacks on Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attack on the tanker, which resulted in crew fatalities, constituted a blatant violation of international law and freedom of maritime navigation, as well as a flagrant breach of UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
The ministry reiterated Qatar’s categorical rejection of using the Strait of Hormuz as a means of exerting pressure and called for its unconditional reopening. It stressed that freedom of navigation through the vital waterway was a non-negotiable principle, warning that its continued closure threatened the vital interests of regional countries and the global economy.
It also denounced the attacks on Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait as flagrant violations of their sovereignty and territorial integrity and breaches of international law, the UN Charter and the principles of good neighbourliness.
The ministry warned that the continued attacks represented a dangerous escalation that could complicate de-escalation efforts and undermine diplomatic and political initiatives aimed at restoring regional security and stability. It held Iran fully and legally responsible for the attacks.
Qatar reaffirmed its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait and its support for all legitimate measures they take to safeguard their sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and property.
The ministry called for an immediate and complete halt to all military action threatening regional security and stability. It urged all sides to avoid steps that could widen the conflict, return to dialogue and negotiations, and adhere to understandings reached through diplomatic efforts.
