5km of unity as Malaysians in Qatar celebrate 'Merdeka'

Malaysians in Qatar marked the approach of Independence Day with a 5km walkathon at Doha Festival City, bringing families together in a celebration of unity, friendship and pride on Friday.

The Malaysian Association in Qatar (MAQ) organised the event ahead of Malaysia’s Independence Day on August 31.

Malaysia’s ambassador to Qatar Faizal Razali attended the event as guest of honour alongside members of the Malaysian community.

Held as part of Malaysia’s National Month celebrations, the walkathon offered participants a relaxed, family-friendly way to commemorate Merdeka (“independence” in the Malay language) while reconnecting with friends and fellow residents.

The event placed community spirit at the centre of the celebration.

Rather than limiting the occasion to a formal ceremony, families and individuals walked side by side, turning the route into a shared expression of belonging among Malaysians living abroad.

The Malaysian embassy said the gathering demonstrated the community’s strong sense of togetherness and provided an opportunity to strengthen friendship and *ukhuwah, or bonds of fellowship, while celebrating the “spirit of Merdeka”.

For expatriate families, national occasions can become an important connection to home.

They allow younger generations to take part in familiar traditions and help long-term residents maintain links with Malaysia’s history, culture and identity.

The walkathon also formed part of a wider calendar of activities being organised by the embassy and Malaysian associations in Qatar throughout August and September.

The programme marks both Independence Day and Malaysia Day 2026, extending the celebrations beyond a single date.

The embassy encouraged Malaysians across Qatar to continue participating in community programmes and uphold the values of “unity, mutual support and pride in Malaysia”.

The walkathon gave those values a visible form, with participants moving together, supporting one another and sharing the occasion in an informal public setting.

It also reflected the role of community associations in helping residents preserve cultural ties while contributing to Qatar’s diverse social landscape.
