The Gulf qualifiers for the FIBA Asia U-18 Basketball Championship get underway today at Al Gharafa Sports Hall, with five teams battling for three coveted places at the continental finals.
Hosted by the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF), the six-day tournament runs from July 25 to 30 and brings together Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman in a single round-robin competition.

The top three teams will secure qualification for the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship, which will be held in Ahmedabad, India, this August.
Qatar’s hosting of the regional qualifiers further reinforces its reputation as a leading destination for major sporting events. The organising committee has completed all technical and logistical preparations to ensure ideal conditions for the participating teams, reflecting the country's extensive experience in staging high-profile international competitions.
The qualifiers represent the opening chapter of the Gulf nations' journey toward continental success. Each team will play four matches, with every result carrying significant weight in the race for qualification.
Beyond a place at the Asian Championship, the tournament also offers a pathway to the global stage. The continental event will determine four Asian representatives for the FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup, scheduled to take place in the Czech Republic from June 26 to July 4, 2027.
The opening day features two fixtures, with Kuwait taking on Oman at 4:00 p.m. before Saudi Arabia faces Bahrain at 6:00 p.m.
Hosts Qatar begin their campaign on July 26, against Saudi Arabia at 6:00 p.m., following the Bahrain-Kuwait clash at 4:00 p.m.
Action continues on July 27, with Oman meeting Bahrain at 4:00 p.m. before Qatar faces Kuwait at 6:00 p.m. Following a rest day, play resumes on, July 29, when Saudi Arabia takes on Kuwait at 4:00 p.m. and Qatar meets Oman at 6:00 p.m.
The qualifiers conclude on July 30, with Oman facing Saudi Arabia at 4:00 p.m., before hosts Qatar take on Bahrain in the final match of the tournament at 6:00 p.m.
The QBF considers the competition a key component of its long-term strategy to develop youth basketball and prepare the next generation of national team players for success on the regional and continental stage. The tournament offers valuable international experience while providing a crucial opportunity to earn a place at the Asian finals.
The Qatar team heads into the qualifiers following an intensive preparation program overseen by Turkish head coach Cengiz Karadag, aimed at enhancing the players' physical fitness, technical ability and overall team cohesion ahead of the competition.
As part of its build-up, the squad completed a 10-day overseas training camp in Yalova, Turkey, from July 6 to 15. The camp featured daily intensive training sessions, a series of friendly matches against Turkish clubs and a test against Turkey's U-18 national team.
The preparations provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to assess player performances, fine-tune both defensive and offensive systems, and strengthen on-court chemistry as Qatar finalizes its readiness for the regional qualifiers on home soil.
