New programme to groom healthcare leaders in Qatar and beyond: UDST president
A new master’s programme launched by the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) aims to groom a set of healthcare leaders for the country and beyond, a top official of the university told Gulf Times.
"The Executive Master of Health Administration programme is a very important one for the country. It will help in building up the leadership capacity in the healthcare sector. It aims to transform the healthcare professionals into future leaders in the sector,” said Dr Salem Al-Naemi, president of UDST.
Dr Al-Naemi said that the programme launched in collaboration with the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa will help healthcare professionals to become a new generation of leaders who will be able to lead the sector in a big way and transform it. The programme has been developed specifically for working professionals seeking to enhance their leadership capabilities while continuing their careers.
According to the official, there are two pathways of leadership development associated with the programme.
"First it is open to medical professionals such as doctors, nurses and other allied professionals to become a leader in their profession in future. That is one part of it. The other one is the administrator level leadership. Professionals in the administrate sector in healthcare can learn a lot of inputs and become leaders in their roles,” explained the president.
He also said that other than the healthcare professionals, the programme is also open to professionals from the legal and insurance sectors too, as they are also related to healthcare. The programme is open for professionals with a bachelor’s degree and with five years of experience in the healthcare sector.
According to the official, the programme is a hybrid model with several modules taught online, while many others are taught in person at the university. "The online sessions are going to be delivered by the professors from the University of Ottawa. The physical classes will be held in UDST,” he said.
Another aspect of the programme, according to Dr Al-Naemi, is the use of technology in the programme. "We are also emphasising on the use of technology in the medical and administrative sectors. The programme will explore how we can depend on data and the programme is focused on data driven decision making for the health sector,” he noted.
Through a curriculum that integrates strategic management, organisational leadership, health informatics and data-driven decision-making, health systems and policy, and innovation, participants will gain the expertise required to lead healthcare organisations and improve healthcare delivery outcomes.
Graduates of the programme will earn dual degrees from the University of Ottawa and UDST, providing them with internationally recognised credentials and a global perspective on healthcare leadership. The programme combines academic experts with practical industry-focused learning, equipping healthcare professionals with advanced knowledge and health systems, leadership, strategy, innovation, and healthcare management.
