This advanced minimally invasive procedure offers a highly precise solution for patients with recurrent ureteral obstruction and compromised kidney function.
The procedure was performed on a young male patient who had been struggling with recurrent obstruction of the upper ureter following previous laser stone treatment and an unsuccessful laparoscopic reconstruction. Despite earlier interventions, the blockage persisted, leading to progressive deterioration of kidney function.
After comprehensive evaluation by the urology team, a robotic-assisted reconstructive approach was selected to restore urinary flow while preserving surrounding tissues.
Robotic ureteroureterostomy offers surgeons enhanced precision and visualization, allowing delicate reconstruction even in challenging redo cases. Compared with traditional open surgery, this minimally invasive technique reduces surgical trauma, supports faster recovery, and helps patients return to daily life sooner.
Prior to surgery, imaging and functional studies confirmed significant compromise of the affected kidney due to ongoing ureteral obstruction. Following thorough counselling, a decision was made to proceed with surgery. The reconstruction was completed successfully in approximately 70 minutes, overcoming significant intraoperative challenges including dense scarring around the ureter from prior surgery and the high proximal location of the stricture, both of which required meticulous dissection and precise, tension-free reconstruction under robotic magnification.
The patient was discharged in stable condition just 36 hours after surgery. A follow-up diuretic renogram at two months confirmed unobstructed urinary drainage and preserved renal function, demonstrating an excellent functional outcome.Reflecting on the significance of this achievement, the treating surgeon, Dr. Ihab Abutabanjeh, Consultant Urology, commented: “Robotic surgery has transformed how we manage complex ureteral reconstruction.
