For the second consecutive year, McDonald's Qatar, in collaboration with Mubadara for Social Impact, hosted a dedicated Environmental Day, bringing together more than 100 employees for a day of mangrove planting, beach clean-up, and environmental workshops at the 'Flower Each Spring Camp' in Ras Al Matabkh, Al Khor. The initiative reflects a broader, long-term sustainability strategy embedded across the company’s operations, from renewable energy adoption to waste reduction and responsible sourcing, aligned with the environmental pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030.
Across the Al Khor coastline, McDonald's Qatar employees planted 40 mangrove saplings and removed more than 120 kg of waste from the surrounding shoreline. Mangroves play a critical role in carbon absorption and coastal protection, sequestering up to four times more carbon per hectare than rainforests, making them among the most ecologically significant habitats along Qatar's coast. The day also included a structured environmental workshop and team-building exercises, reinforcing the company's commitment to embedding environmental awareness across its workforce.
The Environmental Day sits within Rahlatuna, ‘Our Journey’, McDonald's Qatar's CSR platform launched in 2023 which brings together environmental action, community engagement, and youth-focused programs under a single, long-term framework. Among its most standout achievements is the operation of a solar-powered restaurant at Al Wakra Corniche, one of the first of its kind in Qatar's quick service restaurant sector, equipped with 160 solar panels generating approximately 154,127 kWh of clean energy annually and reducing CO₂ emissions by up to 85 tons per year. The platform has also driven the opening of Qatar's first Green McDonald's in Msheireb Downtown Doha and earned the company formal recognition from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change for its sustainability efforts.
Commenting on the initiative, Sara Abuobeid, Director of Marketing & Communications at McDonald's Qatar, said, “Sustainability at McDonald's Qatar is built on consistent, people-driven action, and this Environmental Day is a direct expression of that. We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with Mubadara for Social Impact for the second consecutive year, where more than 100 of our employees came together to plant mangroves and restore Qatar's coastline. This truly demonstrates the culture of environmental responsibility that we have cultivated over three decades. Through Rahlatuna and our partnership with Mubadara for Social Impact, we remain committed to delivering initiatives that create tangible impact in support of Qatar National Vision 2030."Dr. Saif Ali Al-Hajari, President of Mubadara for Social Impact, added, "Our collaboration with McDonald's Qatar on this year's Earth Day brings together two organizations that share a clear belief in the value of community-led environmental action. By engaging more than 100 volunteers in mangrove planting and coastal clean-up at A Flower Each Spring camp in Ras Matbakh, we are not only protecting a vital ecosystem but also building a culture of stewardship that reaches well beyond a single day. Initiatives of this scale demonstrate what is possible when corporate leadership and community partners work toward a shared environmental goal."
Beyond annual initiatives, McDonald's Qatar has embedded sustainability into its day-to-day operations across its 76-restaurant network. The company transitioned to eco-friendly packaging, including paper bags and Happy Meal toys made from paper, plant-based plastics, and certified wood fiber, making it one of the first quick service restaurants in Qatar to do so. In-store waste segregation systems are in place across its branches, used cooking oil has been converted into biodiesel since 2017, and the company is currently implementing advanced Energy Management Systems in standalone locations to further reduce its energy footprint.
As a 100% locally owned and operated business under Al Mana Restaurants & Food Company W.L.L., McDonald's Qatar has been part of the country's growth since 1995. Through sustained investment in renewable energy, responsible sourcing, waste reduction, and structured community engagement, McDonald's Qatar continues to advance the environmental pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030, building on three decades of operational commitment to a cleaner, greener future for Qatar, one meal at a time.
