The two parties also agreed to hold follow-up meetings in the coming days to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire and to verify its implementation in a reliable and lasting manner, in a way that contributes to achieving security and stability in both countries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed Qatar's hope that this important step would contribute to ending tensions along the border between the two brotherly countries and serve as a solid foundation for sustainable peace in the region.

The agreement to cease hostilities came after for more than a week, the South Asian neighbours engaged in bloody border clashes.

AFP adds: Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif confirmed that a ceasefire agreement had been reached.

Afghan Defence Minister Mohammed Yaqub said both sides had "concluded that each country will respect the other".

The defence ministers posted a picture on X shaking hands after the signing.
