Afghanistan and Pakistan were holding peace talks in Doha Saturday, after the South Asia neighbours extended a ceasefire following a week of fierce border clashes.
Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that a high-level delegation headed by Defence Minister Mullah Muhammad Yaqoob is traveling to Doha to participate in negotiations with the Pakistani side.
Pakistan's state television reported that a Pakistani delegation would travel to Qatar on Saturday to hold discussions with the Taliban.
Pakistan Television (PTV) said, “Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and intelligence Chief General Asim Malik are traveling to Doha today to hold talks with the Taliban.”
In a statement, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the talks would focus on taking “immediate measures to end cross-border terrorism against Pakistan originating from Afghanistan and to restore peace and stability along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.”
The statement noted that Pakistan appreciates Qatar’s mediation initiatives and hopes that these discussions will contribute to achieving peace and stability in the region.
Aljazeeramubasher.net, quoted the Afghan government spokesman as saying, “As promised, negotiations with the Pakistani side will be held today in Doha,” condemning what he described as “repeated crimes by Pakistani forces and violations of our country’s sovereignty."
The two countries had reached a truce on Wednesday after days of bloody clashes, before tensions flared again on Friday.
Pakistani security sources said Friday evening that Islamabad carried out “precision airstrikes” on Afghan territory targeting a “terrorist group” accused of being responsible for an attack that occurred earlier the same day.
Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said in a post on X on Saturday that Pakistan had struck "verified" camps of militants along the border areas and rejected that the strikes had targeted civilians.
The Taliban denies giving haven to militants to attack Pakistan.
It was not immediately clear how long the talks would last.
