In line with Qatar University (QU)’s commitment to promoting mental health awareness and supporting community well-being, the Student Counselling Centre (SCC) celebrated World Mental Health Day under the theme Mental Health Services in Disasters and Emergencies.

The event highlighted the importance of providing specialised and effective psychological services during times of crisis and emergencies, affirming the role of educational institutions in fostering a healthy and safe environment that supports mental well-being.

The event was attended by QU assistant vice-president (Student Life and Services) Dr Mohammed Shaheen al-Kuwari, assistant professor (Educational Sciences) HE Sheikha Dr Hessa bint Hamad al-Thani, and SCC director Dr Mohammed Siddig Magzoob, along with representatives from several national medical and social institutions and mental health support centres.

The celebration witnessed broad participation from national entities, including the Ministry of Social Development and Family, Ministry of Public Health, Primary Health Care Corporation, Wifaq Family Consulting Center, Naufar, Community Police Department, Aman Centre, Behavioural Healthcare Care Centre, Al-Noor Centre for the Blind, and Shafallah Centre for Persons with Disabilities.

From within the QU, participants included the Sports Affairs Department, QU Health Sector, Student Psychological Health Club, SCC, Inclusion and Special Needs Support Center, College of Arts and Sciences, and the Psychology chapter of the QU Alumni Association.

The event featured several awareness booths, interactive activities, and counseling sessions, along with awareness materials highlighting the importance of mental healthcare and access to support services during crises and emergencies.

In addition, panel discussions were held with specialists in the field to explore strategies for promoting psychological resilience during disasters and crises.

“Through this event, we aim to raise awareness about mental health and emphasise its importance during disasters and emergencies,” said SCC director Dr Magzoob. “Additionally, we seek to combat stigma and encourage both students and the community to seek help when needed.”

Representatives of the participating entities emphasised the importance of enhancing collaboration among educational, health, and social institutions to promote mental health awareness.

They also stressed the need for sustained joint efforts to ensure mental health services are accessible to all segments of society, contributing to social cohesion and overall community well-being.

World Mental Health Day serves as a vital platform to encourage public dialogue on mental health, break societal stigmas, and motivate individuals to seek support without hesitation.

This celebration reflects the QU’s ongoing commitment to serving the community through education, awareness, and the creation of an inclusive and supportive academic environment for all students.
