A number of experts in the fields of cybersecurity, family counselling, and information technology security confirmed to local Arabic daily 'Arrayah' that the decision to ban Roblox in Qatar represents an important and decisive step to protect children and adolescents from digital risks that could threaten their lives and their psychological and behavioural well-being.
They noted that the open digital environment could lead to privacy violations, unsafe sharing of personal data, or exposure to fraud and hacking.
They emphasized that immersion in these games may cause behavioural and psychological problems for children, negatively impacting their concentration and academic achievement.
They also emphasized that some games rely on reward systems and in-app purchases, which may prompt children to spend money without realizing their value.
They explained that child protection begins within the family, pointing to the need to provide safe and attractive digital alternatives that combine entertainment and skill development, and to promote family dialogue about digital risks so that children can distinguish between beneficial and harmful content.
They also explained that family supervision represents the first line of defence, and that regular monitoring of children's digital activities allows for early intervention when any danger signs appear.
Engineer Mohammed al-Suqatri, an IT security expert, emphasized that the decision to ban the Roblox game in Qatar is a bold and important step towards protecting young generations from digital threats that may not be apparent at first glance.
He explained that the danger of the game lies in its open nature, which allows for the creation of virtual worlds and the exchange of content with anonymous users around the world.
This increases the likelihood of children being exposed to attempts at exploitation or luring, or viewing age-inappropriate content.
He said that the ban should be the beginning of a comprehensive national approach to protecting children in the digital world, combining legislation, security technologies, and family and school education, ensuring a safe and balanced environment for future generations.
He emphasized that a ban alone is not enough. Rather, it must be accompanied by a major awareness campaign targeting children, parents, and teachers to explain the dangers of open digital games and promote a culture of safe technology use.
