Khalas, one of the popular local varieties, is the favourite at the 10th edition of Local Dates Festival at Souq Waqif. So far more than 66 tonnes of Khalas dates have been sold at the festival, according to figures released by the Ministry of Municipality.Khalas date is followed by local varieties Shishi, Khenaizi and Barhi.According to figures, the festival recorded sales of 66,008kg of Khalas and 29,379kg Shishi.The sale of Khenaizi and Barhi stood at 28,494kg and 15,875kg respectively.A total of 11,087kg of other local varieties were sold reaching the total sales to 150,863kg.Saqai, Razizi, Nabt Saif and Lulu are the common local varieties sold at the festival.Grown widely in the Gulf region, Khalas dates are known for their softness, chewy texture, sweet and caramel-like flavour. Khalas dates are a premium variety of dates, widely cultivated in the Arabian Gulf region, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman. The dates are used for making snacking and culinary uses.Meanwhile, the total number of visitors at the festival crossed 78,300 reflecting the growing public demand for national products from local palm farms.Organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Souq Waqif Management, the festival will conclude Thursday. Held at the Eastern Square of Souq Waqif, the festival is open from 4pm to 9pm except on Fridays and Saturdays when it is open from 4 pm to 10pm.A diverse range of date products and sweets are sold at the festival. These include the date ice cream that comes in pistachio, mango, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and saffron flavours. Also, date ice creams, mixed with kunafa and cheese cake, enthuse the buyers.Date juice also has turned to be the choice of many. The juice is prepared with milk without adding sugar. Cakes, mabrousheh, cookies, pickles, jam and basbousa along with date syrup also saw great demand. Locally grown figs and papaya are among the other highlights of the festival.
