The Prime Minister of Malaysia announced that Thailand and Cambodia have reached an immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement, aiming to end escalating border tensions between the two countries.

The announcement came following a meeting hosted by Malaysia on Monday in its capacity as the current Chair of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The meeting was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

The conflict between the two nations stems from long-standing border disputes stretching across 817 kilometers, which have yet to be fully demarcated.

Tensions escalated on May 28 following a military clash in the disputed Preah Vihear area, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Armed confrontations flared up again last Thursday in border regions of northern Cambodia, further intensifying the ongoing dispute.
