NASA announced today that it will lay off roughly 20 percent of its employees, as part of a restructuring plan to enhance operational efficiency.

An agency spokesperson said that 3,870 employees are expected to leave their positions in the future, noting that this number could change in the coming days and weeks.

He expected that approximately 14,000 employees would remain at the agency, without revealing when these layoffs would begin.

After returning to the White House in January, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to lay off thousands of employees as part of a plan to restructure many government agencies that receive taxpayer funding.
