US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Washington will send Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine to help the country defend itself against Russian attacks.

"We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need," Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

He noted that a final decision on the number of batteries to be deployed had not yet been made but added, "They're going to have some because they do need protection."

The announcement follows Trump's confirmation last week that his administration had approved the sale of weapons to NATO allies in Europe, enabling them to transfer arms to Kyiv.

Trump is expected to meet with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte this week, with discussions likely to focus on US military support for Ukraine.

Meanwhile, US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg is set to begin a visit to Ukraine later Monday. (
